Advantages: used short term,it worked a treat.
Disadvantages: The longer you use it the more damage it does.
When I had chronic hayfever eight years ago,My nose seemed permanently blocked. The nasal passages were irritated by the pollens floating around in the air and this caused my sinuses to swell up. I hated trying to sleep with a blocked nose,so I started buying Vicks sinex nasal spray,to help reduce the swelling to enable Me to breathe easier. It worked a treat,in the beginning I only needed to spray it up my nose three times a day and there was instant relief within five minutes. My sinuses were clear and nightime was heaven,as before I had no option but to breathe through My mouth and this constantly woke Me up due to a dry mouth. I continued using this spray three times a day throughout the Summer, but gradually started to notice that it wasnt giving Me the length of relief it had in the beginning. Before long I was spraying My nose every four hours, then it stopped unblocking My nose completely. On a routine trip to the Doctors for another matter,I mentioned that My sinuses were permanantly blocked and told Him that I had been using Vicks Nasal Spray. What He said next shocked Me.. He told Me that this kind of spray should have only been used for up to a week, its really just to get you through a cold. But if you continue to use this type of spray long term your Sinuses sort of become addicted to the spray. Needing more and more to achieve an unblocked nose. Until eventually the spray can become more of an irritant to your sinuses than the pollen. I was actually causing damage to My sinuses by using Sinex for that length of time. He advised Me not to use it again and prescribed Me a antihistamine spray. I had to use this spray three times a day,but at first it had no effect until at least two weeks. After that it was ok,but not as good an effect as when I first started using Sinex. I have to add that Sinex does come with instructions on how to use it and states that
it shouldnt be used long term. But I wonder how many people actually read instructions for a nasal spray,We believe it is self explanatory.Dont We? So next time you have a blocked nose and you buy Vicks Sinex, what I would say is that it definately works but dont use it long term.

- 24/03/01 I needed hospital treatment because of a similar spray. The doctor initially prescribed it, but didn't warn me about overuse so I know exactly what you mean. Needs a serious warning with it. My sense of smell was permanently damaged in the end. Good op. Ann |

- 09/03/01 Good op, Ive never seen the fascination with this product, but I know two people who have. AND BOTH were addicted. One was my partner, who when I met him seemed to walk around permanantly with a tube, but luckily I got him out of it. He still uses it, but alot less. My other freind, wel she was totally hooked for years. |

- 09/03/01 I know quite a few people who've had trouble with these sprays - they really need proper warnings on them. Good op :) |
