Advantages: excellent decongestant, readily available, well priced

Disadvantages: can be unpleasant to use, can encourage overuse

Vicks is a well known name in the area of cold relief, though probably best known for the vapour rub. The Sinex spray is targetted at a similar problem, that of the blocked nose, caused by sinus congestion.

The spray comes in a small plastic bottle with a hole in the top, covered by a lid. The method of use is fairly undignified: stick it up your nose, squeeze and sniff.

It is well priced at somewhere between two and three pounds and it provides instant relief by letting the membranes of your nose take in more air.

It is, however, a drug and as with all drugs there can be side effects. The problem with Sinex is that not following the instructions and continuing to use it for more than the recommended time leads to a worsening of the symptoms and, inevitably, further use. Although it's not technically an addiction this is obviously not a good state of affairs. The UK version is clearly labelled with warnings - don't use it if taking other medication without consulting your doctor, don't use it more than three times a day and don't use it for longer than a week. Users would do well to follow these guidelines closely, using the spray as sparingly as possible - American drugstores sell it with a warning that it shouldn't be used for more than three days.

Further, it should only be used to treat severely blocked noses - otherwise there is a risk of sniffing it into your throat where it can cause unpleasant burning and leave a nasty taste in your mouth.

Despite this, Sinex remains the most effective decongestant available over the counter and if used sparingly can bring immense relief. It is best used at night to relieve pressure and allow better breathing while sleeping. When used properly it is a godsend, as with any drug, abuse is BAD.
