Advantages: Helps clear your blocked nose
Disadvantages: Pricey
Its that time of year again.....cosy nights in front of the fire....pretty fairy lights twinkling away....images of good old Santa wherever you turn....thoughts of family, exchanging gifts and wonderful festive food. But dont be fooled by the pleasant facade because behind it all lurks the enemy - the dreaded cold! Every year, I am guaranteed to get a cold at some point around December when germs are rife. Its usually just as I am wanting to get my Christmas shopping done which is a nightmare at the best of times, never mind when you can hardly breathe, your head is banging and your nose is dripping like a tap! You know what its like, Im sure. Nobody enjoys getting a cold and theres nothing really much you can do to get rid of it besides sweat it out. If you are anything like me, you will also consume numerous cold remedies in a desperate attempt to try to fight it. Anything to get a decent nights sleep! This year I have found a wonderful little product that does the job perfectly. Do you remember Vicks Vaporub?...that gooey stuff that your mum used to rub onto your chest if you got the sniffles when you were a child. I dont know about you but it used to make my eyes water! Well, the same company now produces Vicks Sinex, a nasal decongestant spray. It works in the same way as Vaporub and is also similar in principal to the traditional nasal inhaler except it is much more effective at clearing your nose. The small 20ml bottle contains a menthol fragranced liquid which has the active ingredient Oxymetazoline hydrochloride (try saying that after a few festive beverages!) This is the stuff that helps to reduce the swelling of the nasal membranes to relieve congestion and effectively ease breathing. You therefore need to inhale this up your snout so firstly, you invert the bottle and then turn it back upright. Next, you take the lid off and insert the nozzle up your nostril. Giving the bottle a short, sharp squeeze and holdin
g the other nostril shut, breathe in deeply through your nose. Swap to the other nostril and repeat the process. The solution squirts out of the bottle and when you inhale it is carried through your nasal passage working its magic as it goes! Try to continue breathing deeply through your nose shortly after spraying to help clear any stubborn blockages. If you use Sinex as instructed - at the first signs of a blocked nose and then continue to take 1 to 2 sprays up each nostril every 6 to 8 hours - you will certainly notice a difference. It definately does the trick! These dosage instructions mean that you shouldnt really be using it more than 3 times a day, or for more than a week at any one time. A down side of the product is that it isnt suitable for kids under 6 years old. This is a shame because Im sure it would be an absolute God send in helping to soothe their discomfort. Sinex is quite versatile because not only is it great for a blocked nose caused by the common cold, it also helps if you have hayfever or sinusitis. Although this is a really good product, the bad news is that it costs around £3.50 per bottle which seems quite pricey but I think it is definately worth every penny if it relieves the suffering! It is one of the best nasal decongestants available over the counter. Sinex wont get rid of your cold but it will certainly make the experience more bearable.
