Advantages: It Works!

Disadvantages: Pricey

With the series of colds and illnesses that I manage to pick up at this time of year, I'm always keeping an eye out for products which can help ease the symptoms of 'man-flu', especially those that have the ability to clear the sinuses.

Vicks Vaporub comes in a small screw top-tub with blue and green packaging. The contents of the jar is a greasy substance which has the same consistency as vasaline. The directions suggest rubbing the product directly onto the throat, chest and back in order to help open up the airways.

There is also a method which allows Vicks Vaporub to be inhaled. To do this, you can melt two teaspoons of the product into a bowl of very hot water, and then inhale the steam for around 10 minutes. I've used this method in the past, and whilst it is probably the best way to use Vicks, it can be a nightmare to get the bowl grease free afterwards!

Vicks Vaporub can be purchased from the majority of supermarkets and nearly all chemists. It's cheapest at Tesco - £4.36 for the 100g tub, whilst at Asda and Sainsbury's it's a couple of pence more expensive.

Does it Work?

The thing which annoys me most of all when I'm ill, is the inability to breathe through my nose - I find it hard to sleep when that happens. I use Vicks primarily by slapping a load of it under my nose and on my chest before I go to bed. About 10 minutes after I do so, my sinuses are a lot clearer, which allows me to get to sleep - so yes, it does work.

Active Ingredients

Summary

Vicks Vaporub is a great product which seems to have been be around for years. It is a little expensive, but then you are paying for a quality product which does the trick. Along with Lemsip and Halls Soothers, Vicks Vaborub completes the trio of excellent cold-busting products.

Summary: Effective Product

it's great, isn't it. I don't really get a lot of colds, but when I do, slap on the Vicks, drink a Lemsip with two teaspoons of honey and hey presto, good night sleep

The cheaper versions work just as well - Morrison's vapour rub being a particularly good one for half the price

A good reliable aid to help reduce the dreaded symptoms of colds and blocked noses. Malcolm always swore by it with his 'coldin da dose'.( AD campaign).
