Advantages: Reasonably priced, effective.
Disadvantages: None for me.I like the smell.
Vick's Vapo Rub is one of the products that I have grown up with. When I married and had my own home this was one of the first things I bought for my medicine cupboard. All of my four children have used this at sometime during their childhood and will still use it now.
Vicks VapoRub is a tried and tested remedy used for generations for treatment of colds, flu and the congestion that usually goes with these conditions. It can also be used to help those, as myself, who are often troubled with blocked sinuses.
It has a strong menthol and camphor smell which one can feel quickly opens the sinus tubes to some degree.
I have always suffered from blocked sinuses and so, as well as keeping a tub of Vicks in with my other medicines, I also always have one of these containers next to my bed. I often wake during the night feeling congested and so will inhale this product. Sometimes I put a little on top a issue and put this onto my pillow so that the fumes, gentle if used in this way, offer some relief. I personally prefer the vapo rub to the stick when in the home, finding it effective for longer, although I do sometimes use the stick and the Vick's Sinex Spray.
As a child my mother was a great believer in the efficacy of Vick's Vapo Rub. It would be used as a chest and back rub, if anyone in our family had a cold. I have always felt that it does afford some relief.
Also, mum would put a teaspoon or two of this into a basin of steaming water, let it melt and then with strict instructions to cover our eyes (it does sting if one's eyes remain open) and breathe deply of the fumes. Doing this for five to ten minutes does help to ease congestion and is especially helpful if used before bedtime, when suffering with a cold.
I now have a steamer/facial sauna which is better to use than a basin of boiling water as the water can be kept at a steaming tempeaure for longer, as it is electric. With this appliance, I sometimes instead of using menthol crystals, I will place a teaspoon of Vick's Vapo Rub into the hot water. This works just as well.
When my children were young I either used the special baby version or, if I didn't have any of this in, then I would put some Vick's onto a hanky and tie it to the cot. Then the fumeswould help to clear the blocked airways but wasn't too strong for a young child.
I really do feel that this product has stood the test of time and is a reliable and beneficial product that is worth always having in the home.
Vick's Vapo Rub is readily available from Chemists and supermarkets. It can sometimes be found in pound shops. This preparation if not obtained from a pound shop will cost around three pounds for a small tub.
