Advantages: Very effective in clearing blocked nose and sinuses, uses menthol and eucalyptus
Disadvantages: Oily, greasy, sits on the skin
~~~ Intro ~~~
As a child who was allergic to dust, I always had a blocked nose and difficulty breathing. This still happens occasionally and I still use Vick's VapoRub to help me to breathe better at night. It reminds me of my childhood as well as soothing a blocked nose and sinuses!
Vicks comes in a little shiny box which contains the actual tub of the product. The packaging has not changed in years! It is still a blue pot with a turquoise lid and VapoRub written in big red letters. The lid screws off and the pot is quite wide which is useful for putting fingers in to scoop out some of that menthol goodness!
Vick's VapoRub contains menthol and eucalyptus oil. Both of these ingredients are known to unblock the nose and clear the sinuses. They have a penetrating action which seems to go "in" deeper that some other products. You can really feel them working.
~~~ How to use ~~~
There are two different methods advised on the tub. The main method is to rub the product liberally on to the chest, back and throat and allow the vapours to be breathed in naturally.
The other method is through inhalation. This is very simple and effective for severe symptoms like when the sinuses feel closed over completely. To do this you melt two teaspoons of Vick's VapoRub into very hot water in a big bowl. Put a towel over your head and the bowl and inhale the steam.
This works really well, although be careful as it can nip your eyes a little!
I usually just use the rub on method, but instead of putting it on my neck, chest and back I just put it on my chest and a tiny bit on my nose! It really helps to keep the effects quite strong! Obviously you have to be careful putting things like this on your face and the tub says don't put it IN you nostrils, but a little dot just under my nose works well enough for me.
~~~ Texture, look and feel ~~~
Vicks VapoRub looks almost like Vaseline. It is a cloudy white colour inside the blue tub and is quite thick and oily.
As soon as you unscrew the lid you are hit by that classic Vick's smell. It doesn't just smell like menthol, it very definitely smells like Vicks - infact when I was young my mum bought a cheapo version and I knew right away it wasn't the same just by the smell!
When rubbing the Vick's into the skin I find it very heavy and greasy. It has some similar properties as Vaseline in that is contains turpentine oil and white soft paraffin. This white soft paraffin is the ingredient which gives it it's close resemblance in texture to Vaseline. It does not rub into the skin, it sits on the top of the skin and releases the vapours.
I must admit it does not feel particularly pleasant to put on. It feels heavy and greasy on the skin and if you put it on your back, your clothes stick to it something terrible!
I love the smell of VapoRub. It is menthol, eucalyptussy and very comforting.
~~~ Conclusion ~~~
I love Vick's VapoRub. Yes its sticky and greasy and heavy, yes it sits on your skin and sticks to clothes. But when your nose is so blocked that you can't breathe all of that is the last of your worries! All you care about is getting some air up there and this is the very fellow for the job!
Just rub it on or inhale and within minutes you will feel your nose clearing and your head returning to normal. I always feel like it's really working when I use Vick's. When I had a bad flu this was my go to guy! Only thing I'd remind you about is that if you have been blowing your nose loads and the skin is broken, do not put this near your nose as it will sting like hell! Also make sure to keep it away from the eyes as it stings there too!
If you feel like Olbas is a little bit too strong then perhaps this is a better alternative. It can be used by adults and children and babies over 6 months old.
I cannot recommend Vick's VapoRub highly enough. Every home should have a tub!
Summary: Clear your nose and your head with this little jar of menthol!
