Advantages: nice smell, IT WORKS

Disadvantages: greasy

After the soar throat deciding to try and catch me out on Christmas Eve I am now to embark on a major cold. Everyone calls me the sickly child as if there is something to be caught, you can guarantee that I will be the one to get it.

I am now left with what is starting to be the sniffs and a runny nose and a head cold. So in preparation of been caught I scarpered to Superdrug, whilst everyone was rushing around buying Christmas presents, I was stocking up like a mad woman on well known products that work just in case.

One of the products that I bought is my old faithful, Vicks Vapour Rub. If you blink twice you would miss this bottle very quickly but if you are a loyal customer like me then just ask for it and the assistant produced it quick.

The bottle is a darkish blue in colour and has a label on around the small bottle that is no higher than 2 inches and it has an upside down logo of a triangle on it that belongs to Vicks. It also has the writing on it saying that it is a Vapour Rub.

On the back of the label is its contents and directions for use.

The lid is a screw off lid and the bottle is 50g in weight. When you open the lid it is an overwhelming smell of Menthol and Eucalyptus and Camphor and it is really nice, even this is penetrating my cold.

The Vapour Rub is like a greasy petroleum, actually it does contain this as well and is a sort of transparent colour and is quite thick and very greasy.

Now there is two ways you can use the Vapour Rub.

1) Put two teaspoons full of the Vapour Rub in a plastic bowl and then pour in hot water, not boiling, Place your head over the bowl (Not in it) and inhale and this will unblock your cold. To keep in the vapours put a towel over your head and over the bowl so that all the steam and the vapour is hitting your nose and face. This is a lovely feeling plus it does good to your skin as it opens up all your pores and you can cleanse your skin at the same
time. When you remove the towel and finish your face feels really cold as it hits fresh air. This does work but if you have a bad cold it soon gets blocked up again.

2) Rub some into your chest, after refusing offers from Mr Bubbles to rub the vapour rub into my chest, I gently remove my clothing and thrown on my old nightie and rub over the top part of my chest, Instantly you can feel and smell the minty flavours of the Vapour Rub, it does have a greasy feeling and leaves this on your skin so be careful if you are wearing things that it can mark.

I also when I have the sniffs put some of this around the base of my nose as it makes inhalation easy and tends to stop me from my asthma kicking off as it makes breathing better.
Another plus on this is that you do not go around having a nose like a certain well known star, all peeling off and sore. By putting a bit on and rubbing in well it will keep this soreness at bay.

I paid £1.99 for a small tub of this and normally have this in my medical boxes, but always check on your sell by dates. They normally have a shelf life of around 4 years.

If your eyes are bad and clogged up with a cold never ever put this near your eyes as they will water Kew Gardens.

Also do not place inside your nostrils and it is not suitable for babies under 6 months and keep this away from children as they could be attracted to it. It is only for external use.

You can buy, inhalers, tablets and sticks from the Vicks range. I always plump for this as it is a well and trusted brand.

I am not aware of any side effects with this product but if you are in any doubt before buying it speak to the pharmacist.

You can buy these from all supermarkets and chemists and normally some stores and chemist will do their own brand but in this case I always return to Vicks.

Achoooooo, ewwwwww
