Advantages: Excellent, efective product.

Disadvantages: Expensive.

Zantac 75 is designed for the relief of indigestion and heartburn. It is made by the Glaxo Smith Klein group. The pills are foil wrapped and each five sided pink tablet contains 75mg of ranitidine.

Ranitidine is an H2 blocker which works by stopping the over production of acid in the stomach. It's the acid that causes the pain of heartburn and indigestion. One tablet swallowed with a glass of water should stop the problem for up to twelve hours.

If this doesn't solve the problem, a second tablet can be taken. If you have any further problem you need to see a doctor before taking any more of this medication.

This product is not recommended for pregnant women, anyone with persistent stomach pain, or anyone who gets pain very frequently. If you take aspirin, or ibuprofen regularly the manufacturers don't recommend the use of Zantac. Medical attention is the best alternative.

Zantac is only suitable for adults and children over sixteen and should not be taken for more than six days.

Personally, I find that I go through phases when I need to take Zantac for a couple of days at a time. This is usually linked to poor eating habits including too much spicy food and, in my case, too much acidic fruit like oranges, pineapple and kiwi fruit. The worst of the lot for me is tomatoes and I love to eat them but I reach for the Zantac as soon as I've finished.

I also find that too much red wine, or Coca Cola, has a similar effect. Sometimes the only solution is to cut the things that cause the problems out of my diet and take Zantac for two or three days.

This product does work. I find that one tablet taken in the morning is usually sufficient to keep the acid at bay. It certainly doesn't allow me to eat anything I like, but it stops the discomfort and gives my digestive system chance to get back to normal.

Zantac varies in price but the last 12 pack I bought cost me £2.89 at Tesco. It is interesting to note that ranitidine is also available in its generic form and you can buy Tesco's own brand for £1 less.

If you see ranitidine tablets elsewhere check that they contain the same amount of the active ingredient, i.e. 75 gms. I have found boxes of these tablets in the Pound Shop but they only contain 50gms.

From my own point of view, I trust the Zantac brand and would rather pay for that. At least I know that if I am in really bad pain with acid, then it will work effectively. Anyone who has ever suffered the pain that comes from having too much acid in their stomach will know exactly what I mean here.

Summary: If you suffer from acidity, or indigestion, Zantac is essential.

Zantac 75 has another plus point, if taken a couple of hours before a night on the tiles and then again after your first drink your guarenteed no hangover or dodgy sick feeling.
