Advantages: One of the best antihistamines available, works on a variety of allergies
Disadvantages: Rather expensive, no alcohol can be consumed
***Product Background***
---------------------------------
If your suffer from Hay Fever, or like me have an allergy too, then you will probably by now be familiar with the term "Antihistamine".
Long story short, the body produces the hormone Histamine in response to trigger irratants, these then react with our immune system and produce the symptons which we experience.
Surpressing the bodys reaction to the triggers, and therefore alleviating the symptons is what the Anti-histamine family of drugs do.
***So Why Choose Zirtek***
-------------------------------------
What many people fail to realise, is that Antihistamine drugs come in various "treatment" family types, for example Loratidine (Clarityn), Chlorphenamine (Pirateze) etc., are all types of the same treatment known as Antihistamines, and each will be better suited to treating a particular situation.
For example a drug which works best for Hay Fever for one individual, may deliver poor results for someone whom is trigger sensitive to a different type of pollen than the first individual. Or if someone is suffering from a Pet Hair Allergy, they may need a different treatment.
So it pays to try a few alternatives to find the best suited to your situation.
From my experience with Hay Fever, and a Pet Hair Allergy, I have found that Citrizine Hydrochloride (Zirtek) has worked the best for me.
So if your brand is not working at its best, give Zirtek a try.
I should mention at this stage, that you can buy generic Citrizine Hydrochloride tablets in pharmacies and online, which are a huge cost saving over the Zirtek brand, however in my experience the effectiveness appeared to be lacking.
This to me raises questions over the quality of the drugs used in the cheap generic brands, but I will leave that decision for you.
***General Information and Opinions***
------------------------------------------------- ---
Zirtek Allergy Treament tablets are readily available in all chemsts and most supermarkets. Typically they come in either a 7-day supply pack, or a bumper 3 week treatment. All forms come boxed up, in blister packs.
Inexplicably though, the blister pack for the 7 day supply seems to be rather too large. With 4 tablets down one side and three on the other, and a huge swathe of empty material.
Too me this seems rather wasteful in todays environmentally minded world.
The cost ranges from £3-4 for the 7 tablets, upto around the £7-9 for the 21 tablets. In my opinion however, the best place to buy them is from the supermarkets, where you will regularly find them as a "buy one get one free". This then prices them favourably against the generic drugs.
All of the Zirtek Allergy Treatment packs are of the "one-a-day" type and are largely speaking side-effect free in my experience provided you do not consume alcohol. Consuming alcohol can cause drowsiness and nausea whilst taking these tablets, so is best avoided.
However as with all medicines do thoroughly read the instructions and guidance notes provided in the packet.
Speaking of the packet, I have an annoyance. The "Safety Seal" is rather hard to remove from the packet, so if your out and about and need to open a new packet, and you don't have a knife or similar, your going to have a job getting into the box. I appreciate they have to make them tamper proof, but this tough plastic strip is a bit over the top in my view.
***Summary***
-----------------------
If you suffer from Hay Fever, or have any allergy related symptons then do give Zirtek a try. I spent years suffering with an unsuitable antihistamine because I thought they were all the same.
Don't let Hay Fever get you down, reach for Zirtek!
Summary: Don't suffer with hay fever or other allergies, give Zirtek a try!!!

- 29/06/09 I'm waiting for the day the active ingredient in Zirtek is allowed to be made by generic brands. I live with generic Lotradine and Cetrizine Hydrochloride brands at the moment, and because I have to take one tablet of either every single day, I'm fearful of becoming immune to them! |
