Advantages: Highly effective, resonably priced but shop around

Disadvantages: Can leave you feeling drowsy

Having suffered seasonal allergies for many years and tried all anti-histamines on the shelf I am relieved to discover that Zirtek actually works! The active ingredient in this tablet is Cetirizine Hydrochloride which can be purchased cheaper if you go for supermarket or pharmacy own brand. However, I have not tried these and cannot comment on their effectiveness. Zirtek comes in a very small capsule which is taken once a day. I found that after 3-4 days my sore eyes, runny nose, skin rash and wheezing all started to disappear. This item is branded as a '2nd generation' anti-histamine which it is claimed does not cause drowsiness. However, in my experience it does make you feel a little spaced out and dosey. I would recommend taking it just before bedtime in order to offset some of these side effects. Overall, this is a highly effective drug if you are suffering from hayfever or other allergies.

Summary: The best anti-histamine on the market

I get these on prescription and agree with you on the drowsy side of things - if I take them in the morning I fall asleep by lunch and can't concentrate. I find that if I take them around 5pm that side of thing kicks in when I'm about to go to sleep anyway although I do still feel fuzzy in the morning.

They are really good for allergic skin reactions too.

I use the generics - much cheaper and the same active ingredient.
