Advantages: they work

Disadvantages: can be expensive

I had never experienced any hayfever symptoms until about 3years ago. Over the last two weeks I have had it worse than I have ever had it before. Every morning I wake up with a wheezy chest and soon my eyes will start to itch terribly and then the bouts of profuse sneezing start. It can be incredibly annoying especially when you are going to work. It must be even more annoying for women wearing eye make-up as they have to try and stop themselves from rubbing their eyes and causing classic ?panda-eyes? as my girlfriend calls it.

Hayfever or ?Allergic Rhinitis? is basically inflammation of the nose lining caused by some sort of allergic stimulus (usually pollen). Scientists are still not sure why some people suffer with it and some people don?t. Pollen levels are can be extremely high in the summer months, breathing these high levels of pollen in can irritate the lining of the nose which will cause the inflammation which results in watery discharge from your shiny, red hooter.

If you suffer from these symptoms all of the time and at any time of year you are likely to be suffering from ?perennial rhinitis?, this is basically the same symptoms but it is likely that you are suffering from a dust or pet allergy.

The best treatment would be to remove what is causing the allergy from your environment, however in the case of pollen this is not possible. I resort to using the anti-histamine tablet Zirtek.

Zirtek is available over-the-counter at most pharmacies and supermarkets, it is an anti-histamine blocker, it works by blocking the effects of histamine a natural chemical produced by the human body when an allergic reaction is taking place, it will cause eyes and nose to become inflamed which will bring about sneezing fits and discharge from mucus membranes.

It is extremely effective and only takes around 15-20 minutes to work and it has always worked well however bad my symptoms have been. It is much safer to stick wit
h the newer varieties of anti-histamine like Benadryl and Zirtek as they do not cause any drowsiness like many of the older products like Piriton can. This is very important to take note of especially if you have to drive or operate any machinery whilst using anti-histamines.

You can take up to 3 Zirtek capsules a day but they should last around 8 hours, I have never had to take more than two in a day though.

Zirtek comes in boxes of 7, 12 and 24 capsules and prices do vary greatly. I normally buy boxes of 12 which are available at Superdrug for £2.90, however I have had to pay as much as £4.55 for the same amount in a local pharmacy so be wary of prices.

The product cannot be faulted really as it always gets rid of my Hayfever symptoms and doesn?t make me drowsy.
