Argos 2kW Convection Heater
by MikeBorry ~*~*~ Argos Value Range 2kW Convection Heater ~*~*~ ~ What is it? ~ This is a handy little heater that will keep your warm through the winter months, it is cheaply priced and in my opinion a very handy item to own. ~ Why did I buy it? ~ From my previous reviews you may ... have gathered I really feel the cold and I hate it! And if you weren't aware that I disliked the cold so much, then you know now! My house has high ceilings and is quite opened planned downstairs. I have a living room and dining room that is separated by an archway and then my kitchen is through a small passage way and there is no doors inbetween, so when it's cold it's cold right through. My living/dining rooms only have one radiator between them and that is located at the far end of the dining room (new radiators next week and will be having one put in the living room!) and then I have a chunky old fashioned/retro radiator in my kitchen so even when I put the heating on it never really gets warm for an absolute age! So I thought it would be wise to invest in some electrical heaters and I was looking in the buyers bible - the Argos catalogue when I spotted this. I then went online and reserved it to my local store for collection that day. Being cold is no fun and if this heater would help add an extra boost of warmth to the room then I would be a happy girl! ~ Appearance ~ The size is quite compact and small which I was quite surprised about, the heater stands at a teeny - H39cm, W52cm, D11cm so as you can see it is small but don't be put off by this, I like this as it means it can be easy tucked away out of sight when not in use. The main body of the heater is white, the feet and corners are black as are the two switches and thermostat dial. Along the top of the heater is a grill that allows the hot air to escape into the room. The black plastic on the corners are handles which make picking this up easy and it is light enough to move around the room or even the house. It's a simple and basic heater but it looks fine in the corner or under the window. ~ Price and Availibilty ~ This heater is from Argos, you can either pop into store and buy it or you can go along to www.argos.co.uk and buy it online for home delivery but there will be an additional delivery charge when done this way. I would recommend collecting it if possible as it isn't a heavy item. The price comes in at a very reasonable £19.99! The price is what sold it to me as I just wanted a cheap but effective heater and it also boasted high reviews on the Argos website. ~ Ease of use ~ Getting this home and unpacking it from it's box I found that the only assembely needed was the assembely of the feet which was quite a simple process of screwing them into place. It has the options to be free standing or to be wall mounted. I wanted it free standing but should you wish to wall mount it the fixings are included in the box. All it needed after putting the feet on was for it to be plugged in and switched on. I mainly use it in the evening and have it on the highest setting, when the room reaches the desired temperature the heater has a safety cut out which I think is great as I have fallen asleep on the sofa with this on so I think this is an important safety feature. Even though it has a cut out a light on the heater will remain illuminated to remind you that it is indeed still on and will need turning off. ~ Overall Opinion ~ I think this was a brilliant bargain heater, it is plain to look at but it doesn't scream cheap, and it will warm up my living/dining room completely in around fifteen minutes but when sat near the heater the heat becomes apparent within five minutes. I raved about this so much that my grandparents went and bought one for their conservatory as they like to sit out there in the evenings watching the wildlife around their garden and pond with a nice warm cup of tea and a sandwich, they have been very impressed with it too and it will warm up the whole conservatory in about five minutes which pleased them no end. I had initial concerns about the smell that was coming from it but then I realised that is was probably down to trapped dust and the smell soon went and it is now fine. If I don't use it in a while and pop it in the cupboard under the stairs this smell will be there upon the first use but it disappears within the first hour or so of use. The front can be easily wiped over with a damp cloth should it look a bit grubby. I have nothing bad to say about this heater, it does what is expected of it and can be easily stored out of sight when not in use, and the fact that it has the option to be wall mounted makes it even better. I have seen some reviews on Argos stating that the feet were awkward to get on and although I didn't have any problem with attaching the feet on mine, I thought it would be worth mentioning, people have stated it was fiddly but they got there in the end so I don't think it's a massive problem. I have bought a few heaters since living in this home and I did have a few from my last home but I do think this Value Range heater is one of the best I own, having bought an oil filled radiator and not having a positive experience with it I would highly recommend this over that one! ( Review on that one to follow!) Thanks for reading :o) x Read the complete review |

by bettyboop2002 This is the heater I had put in my bedroom last year. They seem to cost between £90-£120 depending where you shop. They must be installed by an electrician so I can't comment on how east they are to install but it didn't take him too long to do it. The brackets to put the heater on the wall come in the box along with the heater. ... They go onto the wall and don't take up too much space as they're only a couple of inches deep, to leave room to install this you'd want about a meter in width of wall space and 50 cm height. Although these heaters are supposed to be splash proof the manual warns not to put near to a bath or shower or a person who has been in the bath or shower and because of the fact that they need to have an electrical switch I wouldn't think of putting one in a bathroom unless it was really large. I don't think these heaters are very nice to look at, but not many are. The heaters which are flat look better but I doubt they give out as much heat. The surface of this heater gets very hot, so if you are going to have them around children it might be an idea to get a guard for it. On the top of the heater towards the back is a flip open clear plastic cover which covers the switches and dials. At first I thought these looked quite complicated but they are actually really simple to use. The heater has a flick switch to turn the heater to full or half heat, a thermostat with 6 numbered settings for the temperature, a sliding switch to choose whether you want the heater off, on a timer or on manually. There is also a timer dial which has a plastic segment for every half quarter of an hour of the day so you can select which times you want the heater on for. If you want the heater to be on for an hour you can move the four segments for that hour. I have the heater in the bedroom so I would put the timer on so the heater is on for 15 minutes around the time I get up on a morning and again for 15 minutes at night before going to bed. I find that 15 minutes when it is set to a high temperature is more than enough to warm up the large bedroom. I switch the heater on by sliding the switch to manual if I am getting a shower during the day and by the time I come out of the shower the bedroom is nice and warm for me to get ready in. As for electricity costs, I don't notice any difference as I don't use it for long at all. I do know someone with a similar model from the same brand who has one of these in their living room and it's on much more and they find them expensive to run. The heater is easy to wipe down with a cloth if it gets dusty. The manual tells you not to use any abrasive powder cleaners or furniture polish. The manual also has some useful information regarding saving energy such as reducing the thermostat by just 1% can save up to 10% energy and remembering to turn off heaters in a room when they are not being used such as in a spare bedroom. There are also some common sense energy saving tips which have nothing to do with the heater such as turning lights off and using the right sized saucepan! I find this heater heats up really really quickly and is excellent for heating a large room. My bedroom gets very warm and also very cold as it's got 2 windows almost floor to ceiling in height. Recently when the evenings started getting cooler I manually put this heater on and forgot to turn it off and when I went into the bedroom after an hour it was very hot and steamy like a sauna! I think the choice to use a timer or turn it on manually is a really good idea, especially in a bedroom. I would definitely recommend this heater, it's great for someone like me as I may only be in the room for half an hour and I don't want to have central heating on all day to heat the room up and I can rely on this to be quick and efficient. The heater also has an automatic shut off which means if it's overheating it will turn off and when it's cooled down again it will turn on and your settings will still be there. I don't notice any noise at all from this heater when it's on, there's a little bit of clicking when it's cooling down but it doesn't last long and isn't too loud. Read the complete review |

Dimplex CST20 Castillo
by topsyturvy I have always had an electric fire in my house as I think they are good to have, the one I have had for years broke on my recently and so I had none. I was a bit stuck when it broke as it had been years since I had bought one so I was a bit unsure about brands but one brand I do know of is Dimplex. I think once I had seen a few online, I ... started to look around online and then I came across this model in particular. I had seen this model earlier this year but didn't really have the money to buy it at the time so I kept my eye on it and noticed there were some good deals on it. I finally went on Amazon a few months ago and decided to buy this just in time for the colder months as it seemed like an essential and I needed and extra source of heating. APPEARANCE This is one of the main things that caught my eye about this fire, the look of it, it looks very modern, very fancy and stylish. It is 22.6 x 60.3 x 66.5 cm and the item weight is 13kg and it comes in a pack with an instruction manual and a pebble pack or a coal pack. The fire is silver and has a frame with a hood over the flame window, this has a background which is very orange with a fake flame effect which is very nice. An orange light shows under the stones and the switches are under the hood, it is rounded at the front but overall it just looks very expensive and it looks the part. The flame effect I could stare at for hours as it just creates a really great look and the fire does get a lot of focus in my living room with the way it looks. DIMPLEX CST20 This fire is great to put on either just for decoration or just for using for heating up the room. When you push the on button it will light up with the flame effect which you can keep it on just to have as it looks nice in the room, it does come with two heat settings though also, the first heat setting is quite strong and blows out from the bottom and hooded vent, it would lightly heat a room but it blows out like a hot fan more than anything. The second heat setting is a lot stronger and it blows out very hot air a lot more powerfully but this will cost a lot more to run if you keep this setting on but it does work very quickly and will heat a room like that. It is good though, the two settings are adequate for me and create enough heat for my living room but it depends on the size of your house. The highest heat setting takes 2kw to run and it is also BEAB approved. One thing I did quite like when this fire arrived in my house was that when you open the pack it gives you the choice of whether you want to put the white pebbles on the front display or whether you want the coal effect which is dark black. Now, for me it was an easy choice, I wanted the white pebbles as these looked a lot nicer and less harsh on the silver frame. To place the pebbles was very easy, you just place them on the tray, it can be arranged how you want them which is nice as you can add your own touch to it. If you get bored with the white pebbles and do feel like a change, atleast you have the option to change it to the other coals if you want to change the look a little. Now, one of the main features of the fire that people want to know is, does the fire heat a room well? I think with this kind of a fire that being electric, you know what you are getting and that these blow out hot air, I do find that sometimes with electric fires that they do heat a room very quickly but as soon as you open a door or switch them off, the heat does escape very quickly. I do think this is the case with this model and I knew the risk when I got it, I find gas fires store the heat more which is why I have one as well as this as for decorational purposes this does look good and I tend to keep this switched on a lot with just the flames showing and only when it is really cold will I put on the heat just to get a quick blast of hot air. Don't get me wrong though as it does definitely work if you keep doors closed and it will still heat up a room, this is just how I feel about the hot air. I think these are still a good buy and it will keep you warm throughout the colder months and so it is still nice to buy as it looks great and keeps the heat consistent. The settings are easy to switch on and off and to set this up wasn't really that difficult. Literally just needed to take it out of the box and stand it up and then place the stones on and it was ready to go, no complications and I didn't look once at the instruction manual. If it is left on flame only it will be good for energy but if you keep it on for hours then this will eat away at your electricity bill but that is with anything. I think if you want a centre piece fire in your living room then this is definitely nice to have but if you have a larger living room then this won't be right for your house as it probably won't heat it up enough. This has two heat settings which is enough for me and it gives a good blast of hot air but if you want something that gradually heats up your living room that you can leave on for a while then this also won't be for you as to leave this on for a while could be costly. I like this as I like keeping it on the flame setting a lot of the time as it is nice just to have on but it heats enough if I leave it on for half an hour. It looks great in my living room and has changed the look of the room and doesn't take up too much room either, I like it a lot. COST This can be purchased from a few shops, it fluctuates a lot in price, Sainsburys are selling this for £169.99 whereas Amazon are selling this for £127.49 which is a huge saving and the best price I have seen for this fire.
