This review is for the Lloytron oscillating halogen heater which I purchased as I needed to occasionally heat a room without a radiator, and this seemed to be a cheap solution to do this.
I had never previously heard of the Lloytron brand, but it appears that they are an importer and distributor of electrical goods, and have ... been going for some time. They also appear to have a reputable name, so the quality should be at least reasonable for their products.
The unit comes well boxed and well packaged, and comes with a small instruction book, although it's really not necessary to read this to understand how to use a similar heater such as this. It does though have some safety advice, which it's always of course worth reading.
It's a surprisingly light heater as well, so is easy to transport either after purchasing in its box, or if needing to move the heater around. This does make it much more useful than some of the clunky bigger heaters that are harder to lift. It is also relatively small, so will fit into a corner of a room if necessary.
The heater has three different heat settings, 400 watts, 800 watts and 1,200 watts, and although the temperature will vary from location to location, I never needed to change from the middle settings, which was enough to heat a room quickly and keep it warm. So from my experience it's powerful enough to heat one room on its middle setting, so could likely heat a garage or similar construction on its most powerful setting.
I bought this heater over a year ago, and it has been reliable since then, although rarely used. I discovered after knocking the unit over that it has an in-built function to switch itself off if knocked, which is a useful safety precaution. Although the heater might be robust, it doesn't take a huge amount to knock it over, so with children or animals, a little extra care would of course be advisable. In terms of noise, heaters of course don't usually make much noise, and nor do this one, so that it's a problem.
In terms of robustness, it seems to be quite sturdy and well made, or certainly as much as could be expected for this price. I've bought a heater at Argos before, admittedly very cheap, which seemed very cheaply made, so in comparison to that, this is a robust piece of kit. Cheaper heaters can of course be purchased rather than this one, but of all the products that I prefer to be a bit more robust and well made, a heater is one of them.
I bought this heater for around 25 pounds as it was on offer at a small discount at a local department store, and there are some currently being retailed for 23.17 pounds including postage on Amazon, so the prices haven't much changed. The model that I bought was in black, but I understand that there is also a version in white, although I can't see this for sale on Amazon.
There is also a four bar heater which is available which is otherwise the same as this model and which costs just a few pounds more. Although this wasn't a selection when I purchased mine, as I'd have probably gone for that one, it transpires that I wouldn't have needed a more powerful heater anyway.
Overall, I'd recommend this heater for a price of under 25 pounds, it's robust and has done its job well of heating a medium sized room on its medium setting, so is likely to be powerful enough to heat a larger room. For the money, it seems a very reasonable purchase. Read the complete review |

I work in a pub and around October time last year or heating failed quite dramatically. The whole lot cut off for a few days and its safe to say it wasn't an ideal situation. As soon as we were aware it wouldn't get fixed for a few days I took a trip to Argos.
We couldn't heat the whole place, that would take a mega heater, ... so needed quite a few that could be put out and about to spread a bit of heat and generally take the edge off.
I chose due to price - at the time about £15 a pop from Argos, not going for about £12 on Amazon at the cheapest. Its fair to say they are in the bottom price bracket. This is what you get in an emergency or a hurry, not for serious heating. Something to take the edge of give a little boost.
So, as you can imagine the plan to use lots of these didn't really work and they were quickly regulated to a store room, except one which stayed in an office that gets a) used a lot b) its always cold.
In a small office this works fine - basting out hot, not warm or comfortable - but hot air. Its not too diffident from the feel of a hairdryer rather than a radiator - its a fan heater. It can take the chill off a small cold office in 10 minutes, but I think its the loud whurrr and disturbing smell of burning electronics that physiologically trick you into it being hotter than it is.
Firstly, the noise. Its like a dull whurr. Its quite hair dryer roar but you can hear the fan densely whizzing. In a workplace its not to bad, but I can't imagine using at night when trying to sleep - its loud enough to be annoying when wanting quiet.
Secondly, the smell. A hairdryer smells 'hot' and this smells 'hotter'. Even since it was first used and the multiple times since its smelled a little worrying - but actually been fine. Again, OK at work but I imagine you'd be waking up in terror every 5 minutes thinking your house was on fire.
These two things combined a two reminder it is cheap and a low price product - its not high end in any way.
It has two dials on the front - speed and heat. Quite a handy things - you can set it to blow out cold air. Heatwise though, unless its up full whack its not going to do much very quickly. Even mid to high is barely warm - despite it still being pretty loud.
Its a single unit - no base or swivel function, if you want to move it you have to pick it up and move it. Speaking of moving it, care is needed. It has a small indentation serving as a handle but the top area and front will melt your fingers if you grab it wrong.
It serves a purpose - its bunged on and makes things less freeing rather than hot and can be a little comforting. I picked these up because they were cheap, but would not use them in my home. The cost to use is poor, not at all as economically savvy as gas and will only give you momentary heat. Also due to the smell and noise they are less than ideal around the home - it would not fix sleeping. And as they blast out heat on a fixed point they will know doubt burn of melt whatever they are pointing at. A swivel on this would have been nice to help distribute the heat.
If you need an electric heater for whatever reason, this does the most basic function - as I mentioned its like turing a big, slightly shyer hairdryer on - but if cheap and basic function is what you need this will do the job.
Its also worth pointing, that despite its flaws - this does get some use and is still going, so its sturdy at least. Can go for 12-14 hours no problem Read the complete review |

If your anything like me you grep up in a house with no central heating many winters morning before school you would find me and my sister sitting straight in front of the electric fire with three full bars on,
of course its all central heating now and if im honest i am not a huge fan its either all or nothing and with the price of ... utilities at the moment costs a fortune.
I retreat to my little office(where i am right now)to grab a breath as its cold in there but sometimes too cold,so again i fire up google and end up at ebay and amazon going from what i read a little fan heater would be perfect as i could have it on or off dependent on the scottish weather(which can be anything all in the same day)they also seem to be small and very economical.
After reading reviews and weighing up the pro,s and cons of cost versus performance i decided on this little beauty made by Lloytron(they seem to make all sorts)it seems to fit the bill and the price was right
at a little over 10 quid plus free delivery,it arrived in the standard few days and couldnt wait to see how it performed.
It is very light has 2 dials for your preferred settings first is a timer and the second is the heat regulator
it also has a cut out system ie if its not getting the required ventilation it will cut down to a lower setting or cut out all together, this is a brilliant idea and its far safer than a gas bottled heater or mini electris fire
,on the hottest setting its quite good but not fantastic and takes about 15 mins to heat up what is a small room but thats being really picky.
All in all if you want a safe small source of heat thats very economical and safe it well worth a look,it would also suit students on a budget and seems very reliable. Read the complete review |
