Can't believe there's so much water in the house!
Member Name: kathboo
Advantages: Looks great, work amazingly well, light, compact
Disadvantages: Hum noise may be annoying
This is another machine I discovered during a recent flood in my house, and it has become a permanent fixture now. At one point a de-humidifier would have been the last household appliance I would have invested in as to be honest, I thought they were a bit pointless. How wrong I was though!
I initially purchased the dehumidifier after my bathroom pipe burst and flooded my house. After using the Bissell carpet cleaner (see separate review) to get the excess water up from the carpets, you could feel and smell the moisture in the air. It wasn't pleasant to put it mildly, so after a recommendation, I decided to invest in one of these machines, if only to use for the following few weeks.
As soon as I opened the box I liked the machine. It is compact, neat, tidy and smart looking. White in colour, it actually goes well in my living room and looks quite trendy! I immediately liked the fact that it's so simple looking yet oozes quality. It comes with a comprehensive instruction booklet, but it's so simple to use that even I didn't need it! Just plug it in and it begins to work.
There is a handle on the top which makes carrying it simple, and it is reasonably light too. These means the dehumidifier can be used in different rooms and also upstairs.
How to use it & results
Once plugged in the dehumidifier begins to work. It is automatically set at a standard speed, and you know it's working straightaway by the noise it makes. Don't be put off by the fact that the machine makes a constant noise while in operation. It is more of a mild humming rather than an annoying vibrating noise. After no time it becomes a small background hum that you don't even notice (it will feel too quiet when it's not on!)
The machine extracts water from the air, and collects a total of 10 litre per day. To think there is 10litres of water floating round our house everyday it's a wonder we don't drown! It's extremely simple to empty - literally just pull the drawer out, pull the tank out, empty into the sink and re-insert. I couldn't believe the amount of water in it when I first emptied the tank. The tank holds 2 litres of water so doesn't need emptying too much throughout the day. The water level is visible before opening too which is handy as it means you don't need to keep opening the machine to see how full it is.
The impressive part is that is has an automatic shut-off facility, so if you are out for the day and leav the machine on it will not overflow - it will just turn itself off.
Post-flood I was emptying the tank every hour so I knew it was doing its job, and as a result my house dried out so much more quickly. Nowadays, once a day will suffice, though I expect to be emptying it more often as the weather cools down and I'm drying washing inside.
Why use a dehumidifier?
This was the question I would have asked before I got one, It has many benefits including:
* Makes the air we breathe of a better quality so helping improve conditions for asthmatics, and can help dry skin conditions
* Decreases damp within the house
* Removes the need to open windows etc thus keeping the house warmer, and reducing heating bills
* Helps to dry wet laundry during the winter
This cost me £150 from Argos, which I did think was a bit expensive to start with. However, when you witness the results, think of all the benefits of using the machine, and realise that this appliance will probably be used everyday for many years to come I think it's a sound investment.
Summary: Highly recommended!
