      Very helpful

A basic yet effective heater from Delonghi.

As I live in a mid terrace house it's quite economical to keep it heated during the winter months, especially as my neighbours on both sides seem to like furnace temperatures in their houses! Another advantage is that our house is quite small which means it's also cheaper to heat than a larger house. We've never had a problem with being cold, except when the alarm goes off for work at 6.30am and it's -5 degrees outside that is. The only room which gets cold is the kitchen which is located at the back of the house, largely because this is the only room in the house that doesn't have a radiator. When we bought the house we contemplated putting a radiator into the kitchen but as that would have meant running pipes from upstairs we decided to go with an under floor heater which was built in under the oven. However this proved rather costly to run and so this winter just gone we invested in a portable fan heater.

The Delonghi HVY1030 Vertical Upright Fan Heater was the item that we purchased in the end as it seemed to have a good write up and be more reasonably priced compared to other models. The heater itself is an off white in colour (with a grey back to it) and is approximately 25cm by 24cm by 18cm in terms of size. It's actually smaller than I was expecting it to be and I was rather dubious when we first bought it about how well suited it was to heat an entire room! Don't get me wrong, our kitchen is far from what you'd call large, in fact it was very square like until we extended it which has now doubled its size. It's approximately 5m by 4m now. While boxed it weighed 1.8kg so it's quite light and incredibly easy to move around if need be. In terms of visuals it's arguably not the nicest model on the market as it is quite plain looking but we were more bothered about it doing its heating job!

It has a 2.4kW output and comes with two different settings. I presumed that one would be for warm air and the other would be for hot air so I was very surprised to see that one was for warm air and one was for cool air. This means that the heater can also be used in the summer months to blow cool air into the house. There is an adjustable room thermostat attached to the heater which allows you to set and automatically maintain the desired room temperature. It also offers frost and overheat protection which firstly means it can be left on to stop the temperature falling below 5 degrees centigrade, and that it'll automatically turn off if it starts to overheat at all. I'm always wary of these functions and never leave the heater plugged in if I'm not at home. It also came with a one year manufacturer's guarantee but as of yet (after four months of usage) we haven't had a single problem to report.

Operating the heater couldn't be easier (she says!) and the product instructions really do simplify things. It comes with a UK fitted plug which requires plugging into a socket; the cable is approximately 2m in the length which does give you some flexibility about where you want to play the heater. There's also a handle on top of the heater which means you can easily move it around too. Switching it on is simple enough and you have to select which of the two heat settings you want - cool or warm air. After that all you need to do is set the thermostat to the desired temperature and the heater kicks in immediately. Straightaway you'll be able to feel the warm air if you're stood right next to the heater, and gradually the heat starts to spread. It does make a very slight whirring noise as it works so you may find you couldn't sleep in the same room with this on, but it is a very quiet noise and I don't notice it anymore.

I'd say it takes about ten to fifteen minutes to raise the temperature of my kitchen about seven or eight degrees on the cooler winter's mornings which isn't bad at all. If I leave this on it can easily maintain the temperature for the desired amount of time and I've never had a problem with it turning itself off due to safety. We always tend to run down to the kitchen and put this on in a morning, before going back and getting ready for work. When we come down to the kitchen it's absolutely toasty and warms up right up! Due to the weather being milder this week we haven't actually had need to use it recently but I always put it on when we're having visitors at night to make sure it's not noticeably cooler in the kitchen. I must mention that it is only suitable for a small room, such as that of my kitchen which I've already sized; I feel it would be insufficient in a larger room really as a bigger one would be better.

The Delonghi HVY1030 Vertical Upright Fan Heater is currently priced at £18.34 on Amazon while Pizmania are offering it for £14.99 (but then adding on postage costs). We bought ours back in November I think it was from Currys where it was on offer for £15.99 at the time so we reckon we got quite a bargain. The only downside is the running costs which are higher than some heaters, it's estimated that it costs 49p a day of run (with it being left on continuously during the day and not the night) on a web site that I found which may not seem a lot but it could end up costing you £15 in a very cold month! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Delonghi HVY1030 Vertical Upright Fan Heater if you're looking for a reasonably priced heater for a small room, however you do need to remember the running costs! As for the cooling facility... I'll let you know if it ever gets warm enough to use...

      Thanks for reading.
