When it comes to keeping warm with portable heaters your spoilt for choice with everything from cheap Halogen heaters to the stupidly expensive oil-filled variety. Are they all the same? Is it worth paying more?
On offer from "Dimplex Heaters" is this 3087ST Convector heater featuring a rather toasty 3Kw output (including a turbo boost feature for when your really cold and want to warm up fast), a choice of three thermostat controlled heat settings, frost guard setting, overheat protection, a 24 hour timer and the ability to mount it on the wall or have it free standing.
Build quality is excellent throughout with the only disadvantage of this being the heater is pretty heavy (so best practice not to move it around too much). This heater really looks the part, and is pretty attractive (if such a thing is possible) fitting into any room and more importantly any size of room. Included also is a three year manufacturers warranty with many retailers offering the ability to expand this to five years for a additional cost.
Every aspect of using this heater from switching it on at various temperatures to programming the timer is easy and straightforward. I also liked the additional of an LCD display for the clock and timer as opposed to the normal mechanical dial.
For a portable heater there are plenty of features on offer all of which help to justify the price. The 24 hour timer is a feature you don't usually see on cheaper portable heaters, the obvious advantage being you can have it set to come on automatically before you get home or before you get out of bed. The turbo boost feature is a welcome addition as it really does make a difference in the time it takes to warm you up. The hot air generated is also circulated very quickly into the room.
Instructions are included and are well written (should you need them), and include some useful diagrams and advice to where the heater should be sitted and where to (if you want to) wall mount.
I haven't received an electric bill since using this heater so I can't really comment on running cost. There is some disagreement on what type of portable heaters (oil, convection or Halogen) give you best value for money, but this Dimplex does seem to be pretty energy efficient as the thermostat does control the heat output well.
The fan while not very loud is still loud enough to be noticed and is a distraction especially when using the Turbo feature, but it's worth noting that the fan will only operate at the higher outputs so won't always be active. The only real thing I can fault is that the electric cable is pretty short (at around one meter in length) this meant for me (as I imagine it will for a number of other users) using an extension cable.
Granted this Dimplex is more expensive than your run of the mill portable heater, but considering all that is on offer I feel it is well worth the cost.
A few minor faults don't spoil and otherwise great heater. If your looking for a high end, good quality heat solution that won't let you down then look no further.
The Dimplex 3087ST 3kW Convector Heater has a thermostat and choice of heat three settings plus a timer so you can arrange for it to come on in your absence. There's a turbo boost option for when you need heat fast and a light so you know when it's on. It has overheat protection to stop it getting too hot and a frost setting that's triggered when the ambient temperature gets really cold. Comes with a manufacturer's three-year guarantee.
