+++ The Background +++ I grew up in the southern part of Australia where it was boiling hot in summer and uninsulated houses were like ice boxes in winter. For the first decade of my life I had no idea what a warm bedroom felt like during winter. Something must have happened the year I turned 10. This was when my parents decided to buy a Dimplex column heater similar in appearance to this one. Used in the passageway between the three bedroom, this style of heating seemed to be incredibly efficient as all of our bedrooms became warm. I have bought (and "rebought") this style of heater several times and in three continents over the past 20 years, albeit the first three were oil-filled Almost four years ago I bought two of these oil-free column heaters for our San Diego home. One is used in our daughter's room and the other in our study and the playroom. This oil-free heater is currently available for £88.69 from Amazon.co.uk (September 2013). +++ This Dimplex Heater +++ This is a portable heater, which although styled like a traditional oil-free heater, is actually oil-free. It has a heat output of 2kW and a choice of two heat settings. Like similar products, it has a cable tidy for the flex and its castors are described as "easy glide" by the manufacturers. The heater has two power level options (high and low), and a temperature thermostat and knob that has cardinal numbers rather than actual temperature options. +++ In use and my experience +++ We all really like this heater. We find that it warms the room quickly. Of course the ambient temperature where we live almost never reaches freezing; I don't know how fast this would work in an outside garden shed in the middle of winter. When heating our daughter's room, I simply switch the heater on to the highest setting about 40 minutes before her bedtime. By the time she is out of her bath, the room is very toasty and it's time to turn the levels down for the night. This heater makes very little sound when in use. There is the occasional "clicking" noise when the thermostat temperature is reached; otherwise it is silent. For the first month or so of use, each and every one of these heaters gave off a very faint smell of burning chemicals. I'm not sure what caused this, but we presumed that it was simply because the heaters were new. The smell has always passed over time. My husband and I find these heaters easy to move between rooms as required. In fact the heater is light enough to be carried - don't do this if it is hot!!! They don't take up too much room so are not imposing, and are easily stored in our hallway cupboard. Finally, with a toddler in the house I feel I should mention cleaning! I can confirm that the heater is very easy to wipe clean. I usually do this when it is switched off and cool to touch. +++ Recommended? +++ Definitely!!! I'm sure there is some way to calculate how expensive this heater is to use.
