Halogen Happy Light Heater
Advantages: long lead, easily portable, nice bright light.
Disadvantages: Doesn't really work.
When I went on holiday in Wales last month with my daughter and grandchildren, despite it being summer, it was freezing of an evening in the caravan. There were a couple of these heaters in the cupboard so we decided to get them out to warm the place up a little because it didn't have central heating.
We decided to put one in the livingroom and the others in the bedroom to warm the rooms up a little before we went to bed. I felt a little funny leaving one on all night so we only left them on for about an hour and half.
The heater is 800 watts, though you can just have the one bar on, so 400 watts, if it's not that cold. We had the two bars on the whole time! The casing is plastic around the heater, and it has a carry handle on top which comes in handy to move it around. The lead was quite long, although we didn't need it to be in a little caravan, it would be useful back at home. It's also got a safety mechanism on it, so if you pick the heater up, or knock it over, it turns off. The base of the heater has to be on the floor for it to work. This gave me more peace of mind when using it, especially with a five year old running around, because I was worried that if you knock it over, it's going to burn the carpet. The plastic around the heater doesn't get hot which I thought was good, especially if you've got children again.
The heat output isn't great. If you sit quite near to it, you can feel the warmth then, but when it's on the floor and you're on the settee, you can't really tell it's on except for the very bright light that it gives off. When used to warm up the rooms, I think it helped a little bit, but not very much really, it just took the edge off the cold room. I actually liked the brightness of it though, it was nice to sit with the lights off and have this lighting up the room and emiting a little bit of heat as well.
Overall, I wouldn't buy one of these. They're OK. It doesn't really warm you up very much which is it's primary function so I don't think I'd recommend one for home use, as most people have a much more efficient fire or central heating, but for the caravan, it does help a little. They're around £20 from places like Argos and Amazon which isn't bad but still not really worth the money and electricity bill for such a small amount of heat.
Summary: An OK heater for a really small, cold room.
