What a brilliant audio system.
I bought one of these from Bennetts Electrical for under £50. For my daughters 6th Birthday, and i really wish they still had them in stock, I would've bought more.
Its a small micro system. Mainly black plastic casing for the electronic system in the middle. The speakers (which are 40 ... watts!!!) are wooden casing. The fascia has silver metal fronts. The screen is a blue colour with black LED so its easy to see what it says on the readout.
The readout is smart - whatever you play it reads like an MP3 player generally does - it tells you who the track is by and what its called and thats on all formats.
Unit also comes with a small flat remote which has all the functions as the actual machine does.
The small buttons on the front are clearly readable, better if you read the instructions, but still all very straight forward, with labels such as FUNCTION (meaning cd, usb, radio etc, BASS, SKIP << >> buttons and VOLUME up and dowwn. Headphone socket on the front, also has a standby button.
Accessing the CD is from a button on the top, this is very sturdy unlike more expensive models I have had. The speakers are attatched to the back of the unit via slightly stripped wires which you have to clip into the back - which I think is a good idea - and the wires have quite a bit of length to them so you can put them in different places in the room instead of having them right next to each other. Also easy if you have to pack up if you have to move house or something.
Now the best parts. ON this system you can play the following media.
Cd's which you can also play cd-r's in all formats, Cassettes, yes I know these are out of date but a lot of us still have them, SD cards (yes, it has an SD slot!) and also has a USB port! So you can stick your mp3 player in there too. And of course it has a 50 station preset radio!
I was so happy with this purchase, I was more excited than my daughter!
The sound quality on all media is fantastic. With an incredible 40 watts and a bass boost to boot, it can be VERY loud and I haven't heard it distort at a very high volume either.
Now the good bits if you still use cassette is that you can record onto a cassette from cd, usb, radio and sd card.
It has a wire ariel but to be honest I very rarely use this as I always listen to radio via the tv freeview.
I was expecting this to be a cheap little bit of tat but I am more than happy with this machine as anyone (as long as they don't want DAB) should be. Read the complete review |

We bought one for our bedroom which is quite small and its pretty good, although it doesn't sound as good when played in a larger room. One of the speakers was faulty when we first bought it but after taking it back and replacing it the new one works just fine.
It has 2 x 5 watt speakers, programmable CD player, a single ... cassette deck, fm/am and a digital tuner. CD player has all standard functions, shuffle, repeat etc. Also has a headphone socket, LCD display, built in clock, remote control, and you can play mp3s.
A nice little music player that is complete with all your standard basic functions, nothing special. System is very easy to use, as is the remote control. It looks good with the nice wood finish and the compact design. Ideal for a garage, kitchen or small bedroom. Not suitable for the serious music lover.
A good affordable product from Sony. Read the complete review |

I bought this little system from Argos last November. I know it's wise to shop around and listen to a system like this prior to purchase - but I was drawing a blank:
Most hi-fi systems these days have shunned compact discs in favour of streaming media and MP3 playback, and it was a struggle to find a system which could play CDs for ... under £100.
Argos only had a handful of CD players, and this seemed a good all-rounder with it's 5W speakers, CD player, radio presets and it does look good! I got this for well under £100, and I won't say that it was a bargain, but it IS good value.
It really looks the part, being both modern, but the wooden-cased speaker units (in dark wood) look really good in "older style" rooms.
Sound output is good, with little distortion, but it does suffer from some differentiation between very low volume and medium volume. For example, it's one of those things where the difference between volume setting 7 and 8 is too great. I don't worry about it much, but it's an observation.
The main thing for me is that this plays CDs. The radio presets are easy to set up and reception is far better than my previous hi-fi system.
There is a clock/alarm, which keeps good time. This is a useful backup wake up call in the morning, though setting the alarm is a bit fiddly using the remote control.
The remote control is full of buttons, most of which I don't use, but I do find it strange that pressing the play button doesn't automatically switch on the CD player (which has it's own dedicated button). Similarly, the select and set buttons don't seem to have been very well thought out - But it all works fine.
I've not tried the tape deck - in fact I forget that it's there. I suppose that it has it's uses, but these days I listen to CDs and don't have much time for MP3s, other than on a dedicated MP3 player. Read the complete review |
