Well I am not in anyway an audiophile, but I thought the time had come to move away from only being able to play my CD's through my PC. I hummed and hawed about separates and midi systems and found, what I think is the best compromise - micro separates. In essence this is what these small denon systems are. For your money you will get a box with a CD Player, Amp and radio. So effectively it's a Mini sytem, but here's the rub- you can add extra separates to it. Effectively it's a long slender box, so it fits is an area that you wouldn't get 'real separates' into. Denon were the first to come up with this idea although if you walk around any hi-fi retailer you will see sony and techics etc promoting similar things. Now, as I said you can add components when you feel the need, they don't need to be Denon, and they can be full sized if that's what you want. I got my cassette player from Dixons in a clearance for £50 as it was an older model, but you would pay around about 3 times that for the 'current' model. A mini disk player would cost around £250. The sound quality is excellent, much better than a similarly priced box system and ideally suited for the smaller room. Good subtle bass sounds. There is a remote control which is hideous, has to be seen to be believed, the only negative point. I got in on sale as a slightly older model, the box cost me 180 and the speakers ,Mission ones cost 100. It sounds much better than comparable price midi systems, is sleek and stylish, with looking around a little it is certainly possible to get it for around £270/£280. I listen to lots of different types of music, from latin to classical and it sounds good with all, also there are settings for the music type you are playing, so that can enhance things a lot. In summary, reaonably priced, stylish, expandable and good for all music fans
