Advantages: Superb Sound, All Three Formats, Many Features

Disadvantages: Almost Too Many Controls , Dials May Put Some Off

Before buying SCPM30 I went to Tottenham Court Road, the electronics Mecca in London, and tried out all the other brands in the same bracket and price range and this was the one I came away with. Why?

The sound is so much clearer and sharper than anything else similar. Other models sounded wooley or tinny whereas the Panasonic was simply spot on. It also features excellent 3D sound which adds another dimension to your music and also has a feature that allows you to enhance vocals on loud tracks where they can be slightly drowned out.

The bass and treble on the machine are also excellent and allow you to fine tune them unlike most other systems which are indexed.

One of the best things about this system is that it can play all three major formats (MC, MD, CD). You can record from CD to MC and MD, MD to MC and vice versa. It also has an optical jack to allow you to record from or to a portable MD player. It also has a radio tuner with FM and MW frequencies.

The controls on the system and remote are easy to use but because there are so many of them its easy to get confused when you first start using it. Unlike many other systems the Panasonic makes use of a lot of dials which may not be popular with some users but it gives you a feeling of having more control of the systems features. Almost all the main units functions are found on the remote so you can do most things from the comfort of your armchair.

The machine also looks good and is finished in brushed silver and light wood and the control dials are automatically recessed when the machine is switched off. Not a particularly useful feature but it does make it look good when the system is not being used.

Overall the Panasonic is a great machine for anyone who places an emphasis on sound and its customizability and also wants all three formats in a single system.

Be aware that minidisc might be on the way out fairly soon (2 years) as there have been some big advances in the technology recently...the big problem with MD is that it is lower quality because of the compression it adds (like mp3). But a helpful review nonetheless.
