      Advantages

      Disadvantages

It could have been soo great but lousy design flawed it

OMG I wrote this last nite and the review didnt show for some reason- I wonder if DOOYOO are having their same problem as the other month. I got the initial points so something registered.

OK let me start again. Ive had this Micro Hi Fi for a few years now and one of the main reasons I bought it was because it looked attractive, very sleek and stylish and the design (that being it can be mounted to the wall) impressed me. I envisiged this Hi-fi right bang next to my flat screen TV. Alas I was to be disappointed.

      The unit itself:

The Philips MDC288 is not just a CD player/ Hi Fi it is also a speaker system for a home cinima system. This feature is evident in the fact that rather then one solid unit or componants that only look good connected to eachother, the componants of the MCD288 look good and work perfectly well completely seperately from each other, allowing you the flexibility to place them wherever around the room. The companants are, a central control unit made of hard silver plastic resin and a glass VFD display. This unit is only for control and to place CD`s in / power in unit. The other componants are one fairly big and heavy 3 inch sub-woofer with Dynamic Bass Boost giving deep and dramatic sound. Its so pwerful it has its own power supply ! And two 'tweekers' or additional speaker that can be connected to either side L&R. These are silver plastic resin with mesh front (no speaker felt). Altogether you get a 100 watts RMS sound experience

With the control componants you can change the loudness of the treble and bass as it has a digital sound control- there is also a 72 button remote control (takes 2 AAA batteries) so you can do this from your sofa.

You can of course decide not to mount it on your wall- I found that if you did this you would need to do seom stylish cable management to hide the cables (some of which are extremely thick and do not bend very easily) so it doesnt look like a botch job.

      Features:
You can enrich your movie experience with Dolby Digital, there is a surround sound feature, you can play DVD (region 2`s only), DivX, (S)VCD, MP3-CD, WMA-CD, CD(RW) & Picture CD`s. There is also a progressive scan component video for optimised image quality. In addition you have the usual CD setting, play, stop pause etc, volume and sequencer control, you can also enjoy MP3/WMA music directly from your portable USB devices, so it simply acts as a speaker system- ALTHOUGH THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR IPODS as they are encrypted files ! Again another reason I bought it was rendered useless. This feature only works for other flash drives sucha s Sony or Creative.

There is a 3.5 mm aux in for microphones and a 3.5 mm bus for headphones if required. You get a nice clock and alarm too if you need it. There is FM radio with 20 pre-sets, which can be preset according to station frequency or name.

The Digital Sound Control offers you a choice of different preset sequencer modes like Rock, Jazz, Pop and Classical. There is a graphic equalizer to automatically adjust the sound balance and enhance the most important sound frequencies in your chosen music style. But this is all standard gumf these days

Dynamic Bass Boost or DBB is also common now, you press the button and the bass which would sit on the fllor as its so heavy blows up a massive surge so your neighbours downstairs think that the prodigy music studio has just relocated to their ceiling haha !! Seriously though it is ruddy powerful and ive never gone past half way level on the volume.

Dolby Digital is the world's leading digital multi-channel audio standard, is uses the way the human ear naturally processes sound and so you experience superb quality surround sound audio. This is primarily used for the cinima function

Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image on your TV resulting in a noticeably hi definition sharper picture.

      The design and build
      It is robustly built, there is no doubt, it very heavy at 15KGs ! and the dimnesions are: Control dimensions (W x H x D): 200 x 250 x 110 mm, 2 x main speaker dimensions (W x H x D): 140 x 220 x 33 mm, subwoofer dimensions (W x H x D): 170 x 197 x 302 mm. Its high quality sleek design can compliment a modern looking flat and I love the blue light on the bass speaker, it looks like night rider.

BUT and oh what a BUT....it s a top loading slide in CD loader....not a problem normally but the design has two felt runners that run either side of the entry point. This acts as a block for dust coming in from above and wipes dust off of CD`s- except it doesnt do this very well, and so 9 times out of 10 there is dust on your CD and on the laser when you play it causing it to jump every 10 secs....effectively ruining this purchase for me.
By the time I worked out what was wrong, I couldnt take it back...ahhh

In conclusion this could have been the everyman of hi-fi but its serious design flaw nullifies its potential greatness.
