This Sony Hifi was bought a few years ago now, but even by todays standards is top class.
First off its Sony, comes in a choice of two colours. Either black with a blue lit up dial or silver with an orange one.
The two speakers have purple/blue mesh covers which are easy to take off or leave on. Depending if you like looking at the speaker cones or not.
On this model they look cool either way.
The unit is quite powerful having 2 40watt speakers. It can pump out a lot of volume without distorting or crackling!!
The actual unit itself has a host of features:
Tape deck - this is situated on the top of the system hidden by a smokey black sliding door. The tape lies flat on its side as opposed to many tapes which sit vertically. This allows you to record from cds, radio or any media being played theough the unit. It also plays tapes as well. Although this kind of media is being or has been phased out its nice to know you can still have tape decks in more modern hi-fi's.
Am/Fm Radio reciever - As with any hifi it comes with a radio. Quality is as good as the aerial signal really, and 9 times out of 10 its great.
Mini disc slot - Sony were very keen about there new media and so included it in this unit. The mini disc slot meant you could record anything onto an actual disc as opposed to tape. This was great because the quality was so much better. Plus you could fit more data onto this than conventional cds and tapes. Not only that but you could re-write the disc at any point at any time!
3disc cd changer - Now this one confuses me. I dont quite understand how the cds fit and work in the hifi. All i know is that there are three trays to hold 3 discs. The rest i have concluded is magic. But the sound quality is amazing. The unit can play any cd and make it how it should be heard! Absolutely brilliant!
Now onto the the face of the unit.
Hear you will see a large orange (when on) dial, used for a couple of reasons. First off it shows you the time, title, track number and is a clock. But also the whole dial rotates, used to skip tracks forward or backwards! Now thats cool and very clever. To the right and down a bit you have the volume dial. And to the left of the orange glow you have a small dial. This is used to set the treble, bass and fast forward/backward through songs. It also changes the equaliser.
Now below this ther is the md slot. And further down there are four blue coloured buttons. There is one for MD, Tape, Cd and Tuner. Next to these are more buttons used fro programming and md.
And right at the bottom there is the cd tray.
Think that covers the front of the unit!
The back does not really have much to it, except a fan, which i have never seen work. An optical out/in, and four phono jacks.
So voerall the unit is pretty bulky but looks ace. It sounds incredible has loads of volume that just keeps going and works a treat. Its reliable and well built, no problems have been found. I would definately recommend this one!
Having had this Hi-Fi for a year now, i have grown to love it, being a large fan of MD, recording is very simple with easier text input than that found on portable MD recorders. Despite being rather large and heavy, the looks of this are pretty good, with a good feature of being able to dim the front light- meaning you can read the display in all light conditions. A problem I have found with earlier systems. In terms of sound quality, I am no expert, but find nothing wrong with it, with GROOVE bass able to be turned on and off, the mood can instantly be changed. Being a student it also packs a punch in turns of loudness(allowing me to drown out other flatmates) without losing any quality. The reason I bought this model was due to its price(I found it for £250 on Amazon) which can be found to be exteremely good value if you look around. I definitely recommend buying this if you are looking for a multi action MD anc CD player.
I have to admit right now that the only reason I bought this product was because the one I wanted wasn’t available. In the catalogue I had passed over it because it looks just a little child like. But here is where the benefits start for me. I love well designed classy good looking products. Now to be frank this example of Sony’s abilities isn’t its best looking and is no Bang and Olufson. But still it looks good and displayed well has a great look and feel to it. The light blending of blue and silver gives the typical Sony hi-tech edge but manages to keep it simple. Sound quality on this untamed beast isn’t awesome but then to tell you the truth it doesn’t sound much different to any other system. What I mean is that the sound quality is good enough for the average listener not to know the difference between it and a £60,000 system. It can go damn loud as well so it’s perfect for parties as well as every day use. The features on offer are pretty much standard for your mid to top of the range system. The MD deck is great and editing and recording is really easy and I know have the hang of it after copying only 2 CD’s to MD (Not that I do this sort of illegal stuff on a regular basis). There is also a high speed record function so having to wait around for a CD to copy is a thing of the past. An hour long CD will copy in just 15 minutes. There is also a 3 CD changer so if your indecisive like me then you’ll be able to put in 3 CD’s and set it to random play. The different play modes are pretty easy to access as well but one annoyance is that you have to stop the CD in order to change the play mode. Maybe this is just a software bug but it really annoys me. There is a cassette deck on the top as well but I don’t know if it works as I have yet to use it. I do know however that my cassette deck comes with a free layer of dust to cover it. An AM/FM tune
r is also included and you can set something like twenty preset stations. There are 2 features though in particular that are outstanding on this machine: WAKE UP TIMER This is brilliant as I am not a morning person and can never get up on time. Waking up with the radio playing really helps me. As I also have to get out of bed to turn the thing off it is an extra bonus. SLEEP TIMER Despite wanting to spend most of the morning in bed I am an insomniac come night time so being able to get the shipping forecast play and switch off after an hour is great. It is a real help and will be the only way I will get enough sleep before my upcoming A-Levels. There is also one feature that really pisses me off. This is an over dependency on remotes on Sony’s part. There are too many features that you can’t access on the main unit that you require the remote for. This results in many hours spent hunting the remote. It’s the same with Sky Digital but that is for another opinion. There is actually very little wrong with this machine however so I would recommend it to you. Hence the 4 star rating. It could be construed as a little on the expensive side though, but with any Sony product your paying for absolute quality as well as the five year guarantee.
