An expensive but durable efificient hob from a quality brand

We were so taken with our new house in Slovenia that we didn't take notice of the types of kitchen appliance there. We assumed that the hob was a conventional electric hob. However when we unpacked our saucepans and tried to boil some water nothing happened. Fortunately a friend Marco realised that it's an induction hob and requires a certain type of saucepan; luckier still, the old owners had left such things behind. This model is made by Slovenian brand Gorenje; a few years ago you would only have been able to buy this brand within Slovenia and the former Yugoslavia countries but now you can buy Gorenje household appliances across the Europe, including the UK.

An induction hob heats the pans directly. On a conventional electric hob a coil is heated below the plate. You must use pans made from a ferro-magnetic metal on an induction hob or use a conversion plate under your usual pans. An induction hob heats quickly, making it incredibly energy efficient. A plate will only get hot if a pan is directly on top of it which means you have less risk of burns than from a standard electric hob. The plates cool quickly but there is a residual heat indicator to be certain.

Superficially this looks like a conventional electric hob with four heat spots indicated on the smooth surface. There's a touch control panel at the bottom of the plate; it's a bit fiddly to pick the correct heat spot as the sections are close together. Until you get a feel for the heat this gives off, it can be frustrating when making small adjustments to the heat levels.

For cleaning purposes this Gorenje induction hob is great: with one smooth surface including integrated digital control panel you simply need to wipe it clean.

I freaked when I found out I had an induction hob; I had just bought some Le Creuset pans and feared I couldn't use them but I was happy to learn I can. For ease of cleaning, speed of cooking and energy efficiency I'm happy with this hob. I'm told it's at least five years old and it's had a lot of use but it is still going strong.
Currently on offer from appliancehouse.co.uk at £865.50 this is an expensive hob but for quality and wear it will serve you well.
