Argos 3 Tier Indoor Airer
Advantages: Easy to open and put down again, good price, sturdy, works well, not been defeated by our cat yet!
As we have a flat and we are some way off the ground it is just not feasible to hang items over our balcony in case they were to fall off and hit someone or get caught by the wind and fly in to the garden of one of the houses below where we might never be able to get our items back from, also, I don't like it when clothes get faded by the sun and with this lovely weather we are having at present it is nice to leave the clothes drying inside anyway to avoid taking up valuable relaxing space on our balcony.
We always use airing horses and this particular one is our third standard one since we moved in. This is for two reasons; one - our cat and two - my husbands baggy heavy hoodies. Our cat has developed a love of jumping on the airing horse and climbing up to the top and this is fine when there is lots of washing on the horse as she can't pull it over but the last airer that was broken (just 2 months ago) was because she climbed up when it was empty and it landed on an open stepladder and the bottom hinge became slightly damaged and then gradually this just gave up the ghost and collapsed while it was in use with lots of socks and small light items on it. Fortunately we have an over the bath airer and a washing line in our bathroom too so I used this in the interim until we got a new full sized airer.
This airing horse is an Argos one. It comes in silver with a turquoise blue set of edges. The four edges on the top tier (the third one) have small holes in them and I learnt from my husband recently that these are ideal for hanging coat hangers through and so now I hang the work shirts off the airing horse to try too instead of having them somewhere else in our flat. The airer looks quite nice and inoffensive when up, also the silver matches some of the colour scheme in my kitchen so that is always good!
This airer is very simple to put up. Just open it upwards and there is a bar almost as large as the airer that you may have to press down in to place but usually it just goes in to place nicely and stays there of course to keep the airer open and ready for you to load up with items. It is also just as simple to take it down and naturally you just do it in reverse again, I tend to use my foot to move that bar once I have lifted the airer up on itself slightly and then it drops down and I can put it away down the side of my fridge freezer for easy access next time I need to use it.
The size of this airer is very reasonable and about the same as the one that I bought it to replace which is always good as I'd got used to put clothes out in a set order. This has a total drying space, according to the Argos website, of 14m but all I know is that I can put half a weeks worth of clothes for two people on it, shirts, t-shirts, towels and trousers usually without running out of space but it depends if we've had lots of parties or events as sometimes we can go through a few outfit changes a day! I usually just do washing twice a week and for the most part items fit on here perfectly and then I put delicates such as underwear on our over the bath airer to save them from being attacked or pulled down by the cat. It is easy to hang up items on this airer and I normally use the inner shelves of each tier for t-shirts and then the bottom row for hand towels, tea towels and flannels as and when I have them. I can put folded towels on the bottom tier too without them touching the floor which is always good of course. I tend to put large hoodies or jogging bottoms (my husbands) on the top tiers and the highest shelves to ensure that these have plenty of hanging room and then I put thin items on the tiers underneath to ensure that they do not stay wet because of the jogging bottoms or hoodies.
I must say that when this is loaded right up it does lower down a little bit, the same when the cat starts climbing up the tiers to reach the top, or sleeps on it (yes - you've heard that right, weird cat!) but not so much that the items I've put on the top tier end up dragging on the floor. The weight that this airer can comfortably hold is 10kg and I would say that I have exceeded this on a couple of occasions already, but not often. Perhaps that is why airers only last a year or two in our home.
If I am washing our bedding, large towels or other bulky or large items then I tend to wash just one load and them stretch the items across a few shelves. When the weather is nice or it is just warm inside our flat then I rotate the clothes every few hours and within half a day everything is dry and either ready to be ironed (if it needs it) or packed away.
In all I would say that the £16.99 that we paid for this airer was very reasonable. It has been used for two months so far and it is holding up well with no loosening or additional dropping happening thus far. The quality of this has been fantastic so far and I felt that the price was a reasonable one to pay. It looks very similar to the previous two airers that we have had and the clothes have not caused any damage to any of the bars or workings of this airer, despite us often putting quite wet clothes on there or me even hanging my wet coat on there if I get home from a day out and don't want to put it in the hall cupboard damp or dripping wet. I would definitely recommend this airing horse but look out for promotions as I bought mine and two weeks later it had £4 knocked off the price.
Summary: A fantastic airing horse from Argos.
