      Disadvantages

A poor CD/DVD tower from Argos.

After moving in to our first home together it's fair to see that we've purchased, built and overseen the placement of our fair share of furniture. One of the items that we purchased was this Claremont CD & DVD storage tower to house some of our vast collection of CDs and DVDs. This was purchased from Argos for around £29 and this price has now risen to £29.99, in part due to the VAT rise of early 2011.

This product comes flat packed with several pieces of wood for building the frame of the tower and then 6 shelves which can be adjusted to the required height. There is a set of instructions enclosed which help you to check that all of the required pieces are available and shows you, quite clearly, how to construct the tower. It's fairly simple to build and it was easy enough for just one of us to build this tower taking around 35-45 minutes to construct the tower and clear away the packaging materials which are mainly recyclable.

The tower itself is quite nice in appearance with an oak effect and a black racking on the left hand side which holds 76 CDs. There are 6 adjustable shelves on the right hand side of the tower with the pieces of wood in the middle and to the right of the tower having lots of small holes ensuring you can adjust the shelves to different levels to fit in CDs, DVDs or almost anything else you want to store. The shelves are very simple to adjust while building the unit but we haven't adjusted them since so I can't comment on the ease of this. The tower matches very well with lots of other oak items we have purchased from the Argos range and other stores also over the past months.

The main downside for this unit, and it's a big one, is that the left hand side, the CD rack side, is just not well designed to be filled. After a few months, possibly three, maybe four, of use the tower has moved in the middle and this has cased our CDs to just collapse on one side and fall down in the slots. Initially this was not happening all of the time so was fine but now it's as soon as one CD is moved towards the bottom of the pile and it causes the rest of the CDs to slide down on one side, the right side. This not only looks unsightly but is potentially damaging our CDs and has led to several cases getting damaged both inside and out causing some scratches to our CDs. This has been hugely disappointing and while we did not spend a massive amount of money on this I would expect it to last longer than a few months before giving up the ghost. We have had to actually remove our 76 CDs from the left hand side and now I can notice the gaps between the shelves on the right hand side and the middle section of the tower.

The dimensions of this item are Height 113cm, Width 40.5cm and Depth 21.5cm which is a reasonable size. The top of this unit is sturdy enough for our small hi-fi to be housed here and it does not bow or sag under the weight at all. Each of the shelves is designed to hold 20 CDs which is does comfortable and depending on the CD size we can fit a few more in and also two or three CDs horizontal on top of the other CDs so increasing the capacity from 216 slightly which is always good. The shelves are very easily adjusted when building the item to hold DVDs also (up to 65) so that's always good but the poor lasting quality of this product really does let it down for me and as it's only half functional now and I can see that side breaking also I'm going to rate this 2/5.
