Advantages: Cheap as chips

Disadvantages: Sturdy as chips

Ok, I didn't set my expectations too high. It was a flatpack, 5 tier shelving unit, unfinished pine. It cost about a tenner. Fair enough, I wasn't expecting miracles. I probably wasn't even expecting pre-drilled lumber. But what I get was a royal pain in the arse.
First up, I didn't mind having to drill pilot holes for about forty odd screws. That was to be expected. What I did object to was having to drill them through the poorest quality and knottiest lumber I've ever seen. No consideration seemed to have been made over the fact that this unit would actually have to be assembled. Nearly all of the joints went through large and brittle knots in the wood. This meant I had to drill pilot holes out to virtually the width of the screw to assemble the thing.
Finally once I did have the unit together, one leg was a good half an inch shorter than the others. I know these things are cheap as chips and low quality, but you'd think a little more concern could have been taken in the choice and machining of the lumber.
