BIRLEA ATLAS DOUBLE BED BLACK
Over the last few months my husband and I have been decorating our bedroom. We have a three storey house following a loft conversion that we had built, some 22 years ago, when I discovered I was expecting our fourth baby. We made two extra rooms in the loft space for ourselves which when the children became teenagers became a great place to escape to- one an office and one our bedroom. As the ceilings in the extension were sloped we opted for fitted furniture at the time, which although it probably wouldn't be my choice now, it is still in beautiful condition. This presented quite a challenge as I wanted to create a French style bedroom, so we opted for some other improvements to the room which included the purchase of a new bed, curtains and various accessories.
We had previously had a divan bed but I wanted a bedstead. This in itself was under debate as I have a bedstead already in my cottage in Scotland. This bedstead is a traditional one with a high back wrought iron headboard, and it stands high off the ground. Don't get me wrong I love it, but it is the kind that makes you feel quite nervous in case you turn over and end up close to the edge. This rather negative aspect of ownership relating to these beautiful traditional beds doesn't matter so much If you are on holiday, as it adds to the charm of the room and creates a beautiful atmosphere, but on a daily basis it has to be said bedsteads often struggle to compete with the brilliant nights sleep you can obtain from a Divan. Something I was told many years ago when I purchased that original bedstead in Hatfields, a well respected department store in Colchester, was that you have to spend a lot of money on a mattress when purchasing a bedstead as it is imperative that the edges are as supportive as the centre. I did this at the time and opted for a high quality mattress, but the slightly negative aspect of the high bed frame in terms of feeling "perched on the edge" made me rather wary of buying a similar bed for a room that was to be used every day of the year.
After a lot of research and time spent thinking I noticed an inexpensive bed frame on Amazon and decided to look further. The Birlea Atlas 4ft 6 Double Bed frame retails on Amazon for £125, and if you look at the photograph above this review you will see that it looks impressive, and even more important to me it is a slightly toned down version of a traditional bedstead so that it fits well in a contemporary setting. Also important to me was the height of the headboard as this is just perfect as we have very low ceilings and the bed has to fit in an alcove.
The bed frame is made from metal and has antique brass finials, and there is ornate craft work on each end of the bed. There is a sprung slatted base included so all you have to do is to supply a mattress. The bed measures Double: W 141cm x L 199cm x H 106cm and is delivered in three packs ready for you to assemble yourself. You do have a choice of sellers on Amazon, with some having delivery charges but lower base prices, and Amazon offering free delivery. We actually opted for an Amazon Warehouse Deal, which we were lucky enough to see which was a customer return. Warehouse deals have a tiny bit of damage and are heavily discounted. In our case there was a tiny mark on one of the pieces, but it isn't visible at all, and this took the price down to £80 which was an incredible deal. It is worth looking out for discounted items as often they are in almost perfect condition.
The instructions for fitting were comprehensive and detailed and it took us about half an hour to erect the bed frame. You didn't need any extra tools either. It was helpful to have two people but it is possible to do it alone.
Comfort - Yes- Cosy - Yes!
The proof of the pudding as they say is in the eating, and what good is a bed if it isn't comfortable? - well this is outstanding. It is a lovely height- quite low in fact, so Molly my little dog can put two paws up to greet me in the morning (in her younger days she could have jumped on it) It is sturdy and supportive, and we used our Slumberland mattress from the divan we had before as it was relatively new. The mattress is a hard one as I prefer these, and it works well with the bed frame creating a lovely sleeping surface that is supportive right to the edges. I believe we paid about £350-£450 for it so you do need to spend a little on a mattress if you are opting for a bedstead like this, but not as much as if you opt for the higher more traditional types as these need several hundred pounds spending on a mattress to secure a good nights sleep. You also have to check to make sure that the mattress you have is suitable for slatted bases as some are not.
I think the important aspect to this bedstead is that it doesn't dominate the room, as my more traditional one does. Up in Scotland this was the effect that I wanted, but at home my new room has a much more contemporary feel to it, and this bedstead blends into that scheme well and isn't the focal point in the room.
I think this bedstead is remarkable value for money. It is extremely well made from quality materials, and it offers a lovely alternative to a traditional bedstead that doesn't break the bank. My daughters love this bed and are thinking of purchasing their own. It is ideal for anyone just starting out and setting up home, and additionally beds of this style sell well on Gumtree and Ebay, so if you fall out with it you are guaranteed some resale value. I have also been so delighted to be able to transform my bedroom without breaking the bank. With the help of H&M, that I recently discovered do the most beautiful and inexpensive home wears, and a few Ikea purchases, I have a new bedroom, and thanks to this bedstead I have a lovely new place to lay down my head at night. Highly recommended
