Following on from the huge success of his recent report on 'coffee tables in general' our intrepid home furnishings correspondant Charles "Charlie" Chuckle turns his attention this week to another essential household item - the very useful, but oft understated, chair: Little did I know, when approached by persons unknown and coerced into doing an indepth investigation into chairs, just how fascinating a subject they can be. In the course of my investigations I have ventured as far afield as the kitchen, my brothers house and even undertook the perilous task of looking up several pictures of chairs on a website (there are a few such sites, just search for 'pictures of chairs' on google). I did however stop short of flicking through a mail order catalogue in my quest for chair knowledge since I'd sort of lost interest by that time. Frequently throughout the course of my research I was forced to go 'on location' to my big chair in front of my PC. I now feel that I am sufficiently knowledgable on the subject of chairs to voice my tuppence'orth. Did you know that chairs have been around since the time when people started to get fed up with having sore bums from sitting on hard things? Yes, that long ago. Some people never learn though, a few of the chairs I tried were themselves rather hard. Another strange fact about chairs is that very few of them have adjustable heights, excepting those swively officey ones. People have different lengths of leg yet the chair manufacturing Zsars seem to believe that a 'one chair fits all' attitude is acceptable, I think not. I must admit that I was rather stunned at the similarity between coffee tables (of which I also have extensive knowledge) and chairs. Both come in a variety of materials such as wood, plastic and metal, both usually have three or four legs (there are of course exceptions to the leg count rule but that is far beyond the remit of this r
eport), both are retailed by similar retailers, manufactured by similar manufacturers and purchased by similar purchasers. I had to look long and hard, risking life'n'limb, to find the true difference between a chair and a coffee table. My task was made all the more difficult when I spotted someone actually sitting on a coffee table, and on another occasion saw a cup of coffee being spilled on a chair. The difference is that no matter how hard I looked I couldn't find a glass topped chair anywhere. Chairs have many uses ranging from the obvious 'standing upon to change lightbulbs' right through to 'leaning too far back on and going arse over ear', oh and less usually simple 'sitting on'. When buying a chair be sure to buy one that will suit all of your requirements. The last thing to make sure of is that you choose a chair that fits your bum. If you are of the female persuasion and you are having difficulty with this I will be happy to help - just send me a photo, or better still a video, of your bum in various states of dress and undress and I'll suggest something or other (maybe to do with chairs, but probably not). I hope you found this report on chairs to be useful and I would now like to ask for your suggestions for my next furniture reviewing assignment. Please note: I don't do Ikea.
One day I was watching Arsenal vs Liverpool, so today then, when i sat down on a chair.
