I was cleaning out my pantry yesterday moving all my jars around and I thought Ahhh there?s an opp in these ere jars Let me tell you what I store my cooking ingredients in. I get fed up with split bags, difficult to close properly so my long grain rice is in a sweet jar, so are my pasta twists and lentils .Do you know the sort I mean the ones you get in newsagents/ sweetie shops displaying loose sweets. I have a shop around the corner that when he has emptied the jars puts them to one side. I go in and say please can I have one of those jars he says certainly and gives it to me, yes gives it to me free. They are excellent for storing dry foodstuffs in and I have some at work storing threading beads in. Next my dried beans haricot and kidney these are stored in a coffee jar with a twist lid keeps them dry, Sugar brown sugar is in a plastic jar that once had golden Syrup in it, the white sugar is in another coffee jar. My tea is in a container that had cherries in it once. Spagetti is stored in a tall thin red striped tin that once had biscuits in; the biscuits were a Christmas presents a couple of years ago. By the side of my bread bin (bought for the purpose) I have an orange tin that says Cointreau, it once contained a litre of Cointreau I bought in France, it is a tall square tin that is just perfect for storing my cream crackers in. Sweet biscuits are in a biscuit tin I had biscuits given to me in once I also keep all my plastic tubs the ones I get margarine in the ones I get yoghurt in all come in useful either at home or at work. I save all sorts of containers for an assortment of things , shoe boxes are great I find children?s ones just the right size for cassettes once I had an old large paint tin which I painted and stuck pictures on as a waste bin Over the years I have recycled many a tin, box, or tub for use other than the purpose
it was intended for. Remember not to store poisonous substances e. g turp?s , cleaning fluids in old drink bottles. Children may not be able to tell the difference or even read the new label you put on. These are some of the ways I have reused containers in my house Thank you for reading..Mary

- 16/10/02 Recycling is good for the environment too! I put my left over paint in coffee jars, it saves space and I can see which colour paint is in them. |
