Advantages: Keep flies and wasps out

Disadvantages: cats may pull them down!!!

In hot weather I like to open the door into my garden and let the sunshine and fresh air filter through.

The trouble is that flies, wasps, midgies and other flying insects take this as open invitation to come inside where its cooler.

I was walking through our local Wilkinson's store today and a spotted a 'door blind'. It is many years since I have seen one of these in use and I remembered my grandmother using one.

This is a plastic bar with strips of lightweight coloured plastic attached to it. You open your door and place the blind in the doorway and it acts like a curtain. The movement of the strips stops insects from trying to come in.

There is no fitting required either because the ends of the bar have rubber cups on them. You just cut a little off if you need to. Then you can just push the rod in place when the door is open.

This works very well and the plastic strips are so light that you can just walk through them. I haven't noticed any flying visitors today either!

These blinds vary in price and I have seen them in 'posh shops' like 'Alternatives' for £12.99. However, they are only £1.99 in Wilkinson's and there really isn't any difference.

It's worth trying one of these if you like to have you doors open. Its much better than having to use insecticide sprays in the house to kill wasps and other nasties. If you've ever had to chase a bad tempered wasp round the house with a rolled up newspaper you will know how annoying they can be.

Incidentally, these thin plastic strips rustle in the breeze and make entertaining toys for cats and dogs!

If you have patio doors then you can use a couple of these but put them on hooks!

The problem is my back door is a patio door and they won't fit.
