Advantages: They are mine now! Not Hillary's.
Disadvantages: I haven't found any.
If eyes are the windows to the soul would it be too fanciful to suggest that windows reflect the heart of the home? Dressing windows has three main functions, to keep out the light, to keep out the dark, (one of my grandchildren insists that the dark be kept out and will then quite happily go to sleep in the dark!) and to give privacy to the occupier. It must do all this whilst still complimenting the decoration and furniture of the room. To be comfortable the choice must reflect the owner's personality and the function of the room, be it severe and plain or flounced and pretty. Blinds are ideal. They can be 'dressed up', bought fussy or bought plain. For me the only dodgy thing is the measuring. With a blind you do not have the leeway that you usually have with other types of 'window dressing'. The measurements are critical. Now here is where a company of some thirty years standing can come in and remove that worry. You may wonder where 'blinds' can fit into this category. I'll tell you why. The dictionary definition of a curtain is 'a piece of material that can be drawn across an opening or a window, to shut out light or provide privacy', or what other definition would you give of a blind?. An advisor from Hillary's will come to your home at a time to suit you. Although their head office is in Leicester they have local advisors all over England. If you call them on their freephone number they will visit and give you a free, no obligation quote after taking the necessary measurements. Their prices are very competitive and whenever I have ordered from them they have had offers, which I have been able to take advantage of without compromising my ideas. If you have your own ideas the advisor will help you realise them but if you are not sure of the finish you want to achieve the advisor is able to guide you and make suggestions. If you want to trust your own measurements you can
go into their website and give the relevant details and the blinds will be with you within five days. All their blinds are made to the customer's exact requirements. This means that each is made for the individual home. They have literally thousands of style, colour and exclusive fabric combinations to choose from. So you see they can accommodate almost any taste or budget. Their range is vast. We have just had fitted vertical blinds for the long windows at the front of our bungalow. The slats of these vertical blinds come in two widths, 3" and 2", in various materials and colours. Our choice had been white in our old house but we chose soft cream, brocade type WASHABLE blinds for the front of this house. One room is a bedroom and this has soft cream muslin draped and the other is the living room and this has terracotta voiles. Each room retains its own individuality even though each basic blind is the same. If vertical blinds are not your 'thing' you have a choice of Rollers, Venetian, wooden Venetian Aluwood, Romans, Pleateds and Awnings. Besides this they also have quite a display of conservatory blinds available. So it would seem that if you are looking for a simple Roller blind right through to a whole conservatory of window coverings, you need look no further. These blinds do not 'just arrive' and leave you to assemble them. They are brought by a (I was going to say 'man', because mine was, but I guess it might easily be a woman so I had better say), person! This 'person' unpacks the goods and assembles them and shows you the facilities provided and gives a contact number, in case a problem should arise. As I have already mentioned you can go into their website to order your window fashion, but you can also just go in to browse. You will be able to see many of their blinds, order a brochure or even go into their design tips. At present Marianne Shillingford the TV int
eriors and decorating expert is giving brilliant ideas and sharing designer tips to make your windows make a 'statement'. Besides being very enthusiastic about this company, which I first used about six years ago, I am also in favour of these vertical blinds. It was HIM who 'fancied' them at first; he had them in his office and was impressed with the way that you could have as much or as little of the sunshine as you wanted. I thought, at that time, that they were rather officey. I was wrong.
