Curtains

Why do we have curtains? To stop the neighbours and passers by peeking in the windows, to keep the cold night draughts out, to look good and match our home décor.
I recently had to replace an aging pair for a new pair. I read some ones op on curtains and thought there that?s something I can write about.
When I moved into my first home I had little money and relatives donated us curtains.
May be not the colours, fabrics I would have chosen but poor young things can?t be choosy.
In the past I have saved money by making curtains, buying cheap material and sewing my own. Not too difficult just arduous sewing long strips of fabric.

What fabrics to choose for your curtains what colour, what length? Some of these may be decided by price short ones cheaper than long.
I have some nice thick velvet curtains down stairs, the texture looks good, and they look fairly luxurious and when drawn on a winter?s eve make the room cosy. They are lined the thicker fabric helps prevent heat loss through the windows.

We decorated our bedroom this summer and decided the old curtains would not match the colour scheme a sort of orangey peach; they were getting tatty any way. We have quite wide windows in our bedroom. I did consider making some but I decided I was too lazy. So we looked around went to fabric warehouse and saw a pair we thought would be fine. We have always had heavy dark curtains for the bedroom as the early morning light disturbs me. but we saw a pair of a golden colour with a slight design on them. They cost about £120 including a valance (something we have never had before) and tiebacks. They are a fairly thick fabric but you can still see the light through them. The colouring looked good with our room.
We went to bed that night and when I awoke in the morning a slight light was coming through the curtains it looked as if it was a fairly sunny morn I got up went downstairs looked out the window it was a d
ull dreary day. I realised that the light coming through the curtains was a sunny colour because of the colour of the curtains. I like waking up to a sunny coloured light coming through the curtains even if it isn?t sunny outside. The light isn?t so bright it disturbs me.
I haven?t had valences before but having put valances up in the bedroom I think it finishes the look and tie backs also just tidies the look up finishes of the look. (maybe its old age creeping in)
Oh? must just mention this baby?s room has got some Winnie the Poo curtains a yellow background with blue strips and winnie the poo pictures looks lovely. Sleepydormouse and baby Adrian is doing ok he has a rash Dr has said it?s a mild infection and has put him on anti biotics. But nothing to worry about will have to go and visit again at the weekend, take my daughter a nice healthy home cooked diner, maybe make some cakes for her.
Anyway must go and make sure the curtains a drawn properly stop the passerby?s peering in ,and the cold draughts coming into the house. Thanks for reading

I've decided to go for wooden blinds in the living room instead of curtains, although I am crocheting a pair of side curtains for decoration otherwise I think it'll look too bare. Window dressings can really change the character of a room. ~Sharon

Now I'm in need of advice re. curtains, people. Ten foot ceilings, recessed windows (good old Edinburgh architecture), and I can't find anything ready-made to fit. I'm looking for something in a nice creamy cotton look, lined, possibly blackout lined (need to go there on a sunny day and get the builders to remove all the stuff currently in front of my bedroom window so that I can see how much light comes in; not very much, probably) and not too pricey! Length is the main problem, still can't find anything ready-made that's 160 W x 280 drop. Any ideas? And has anyone tried John Lewis' service?

When re-furnishing recently I replaced some curtains, and only then realised how long the old ones had been up.
