The Decofun Disney Cars Toy Storage Box had received some mixed reviews on Amazon, so I was a little dubious about purchasing it at first. It's priced at £45, which seems a little pricy for flat-packed furniture of this sort of size, but then it does seem to be the going rate for toy boxes in general. I decided that as a simple, unpainted blanket box would cost at least this price, it had to be worth a go. If it was as bad as some reviewers suggested it was, I'd just return it for a refund.

When it arrived, I was initially surprised by how small and thin the packing box was. I had read the dimensions of the toy box before purchasing it, so I don't know why I thought it should have been bigger than it was in fairness! I have to say that once this is built up, the size is perfectly adequate for a young child - it just looked like it was going to be alarmingly small on arrival.

The instructions were relatively simple to follow, and I had this thing built in about twenty minutes. It's just a case of fixing five sides together (the back of the bench is a seperate piece to the back of the toy box), and then fitting the hinge on the lid, and attaching that to the box. It really wasn't very difficult at all for me, despite what some other reviewers on Amazon had suggested.

Once built this is a lovely little piece of furniture for a boy's bedroom or play room. The picture panels are smooth and glossy, with really bright prints on them. The red wood is also smooth to the touch and has a professional finish to it. The actual bench is sturdy and wide enough for two pre-schoolers to sit on side-by-side, or one slightly older child alone. In fact this might be a good shoe bench for young kids even, as they could store their shoes inside it and then sit on it to put them on.

The lid has been designed in a really functional and child-friendly way which impressed me. There's a long slit along the section where the lid can be lifted from that is just wide enough to prevent a child's hand from getting squashed should they over-enthusiastically slam the lid shut! The hinge is also slow-moving, and the lid stays put once opened without falling shut - it has to be pushed shut. Again, this is a great safety feature for young kids.

The actual storage room inside is sufficient for about fifty of the grandson's soft animal friends to live inside. The toy box is a little narrower than I'd expected it to be, but it's also reasonable long and deep. It surprised me in just how much it could hold in fairness. If it was any bigger, small hands wouldn't be able to get to the bottom or back of it in fairness.

For £45 you really can't go wrong with this. It's much sturdier and more likely to last than those character sofas are (I know, we've had one in the past), plus it doubles up as a toy box and it looks just great. I'm really pleased with this and would happily recommend it to others.
