Advantages: Very comfortable

Disadvantages: Expensive and can move about a bit

After having problems with my hip since I gave birth to my daughter, my doctor suggested trying a memory foam mattress topper as the pain may have been exacerbated by a mattress which was too firm.

I did a bit of research as to pricing and quality on the internet, and it appeared that aswell as a difference in price, there was also a difference in the type of foam used and the firmness and thickness of the topper.

I decided to have a look in Dunelm, purely on the basis that they have the items out on display for you to try. I had purchased a memory foam pillow a couple of years ago, and couldn't get on with it at all, as it felt like I was resting my head on a rock, and so I was expecting to have the same reaction when trying out the mattress.

However when you sit on the mattress, you can feel the comfort straight away. This particular topper is 5cm thick, which I would say is in the middle range (you can get 3cm and 7cm thicknesses from other shops) and cost £99.00 for a double size. I'm not particularly big or heavy and so I felt that I had enough support with this thickness.

The topper comes rolled up and in its own drawstring bag. When you first undo the packaging, they suggest that you lie the topper somewhere flat and let it uncurl and relax back to its normal shape for 24 hours before use.

The topper comes with its own brushed cotton protector with a zip, and has four elastic sections (one on each corner) so that you can hook it over your existing mattress.

Some websites suggest that it can take you up to two weeks to get used to using a memory foam topper, but I must say that I had the best nights sleep I'd had in ages on the first night I used it. I certainly couldn't live without it now. The only downside to these toppers is that they do move about a bit as you move in the bed. It's not a massive amount but I do have to shift it back across the bed a bit after a couple of nights. In addition, because you are adding a couple of centimetres to the depth of your mattress, some fitted sheets may be difficult to get over both items or "ping" off, so you may want to use flat sheets or move to the next bedding size.

I have read that some people find that they get too hot on a memory foam topper, but I haven't found that to be the case and I have had it since the summer.

Summary: Expensive but worth every penny
