Advantages: quiet night.
Disadvantages: no bed
I have moved in with my partner, and one of the first things that had to go was the bed. It was 15 years old, and squeaked every time it moved lol, so can you imagine what a night of passion was like. We decided we could stand it no longer, so we went to Durham Pine and ordered a bed a 4ft 6in bed done in pine with ornate headboard the works. Bought it hoping it would last another 15 years. It arrived last week, and on the Saturday we unpacked it and could see nothing wrong. We dismantled the old bed, and had a huge bonfire in the garden; it was lovely watching that squeaky old bed going up in smoke. The new pine bed was well made and easy to put together, we assembled the sides and connected it to the base and the head of the bed, but then our first problem, the centre rail, which holds the slats was a bout 3 inches to short. We rang the shop, and they said we would send you the plank of wood in the post. That set the mind boggling, the poor postman carrying a plank of wood across his handlebars. (yes our post is delivered by bike) Oh well we thought we can prop the plank up at the base of the bed so we can use it. We then laid the mattress on the planks and whoops the mattress was to short, no the bed was to long. The supplier had delivered 5ft bed rails and not the 4ft 6” ones, so someone else had our rails, but a 5ft mattress. So they we in the same boat as we were. So back on the phone. Now we are waiting for Durham Pine to deliver the right bits. They have offered to strip the bed down rebuild it with the right bits, now that’s what I call service. I now hope this bed does last 15 years, because we could not go through this again. We are using the bed but have to make sure we do not lose our pillows down the back, and we lay very still, in case we move the middle plank. All in all it has been a laugh, it can only happen to us.

- 12/10/00 If this is a new bed then I would take it back! I would say that it squeaks every time you roll over in the night (less embarrasing than saying that it is a passion-killer!) and that you want a bed that doesn't squeak! You have every right to complain about it both to the shop that you bought it from and the manufacturer. If it's not a new bed, is it the mattress or the base that squeaks? If it is the mattress, then you can change it! but I can't suggest anything about a squeaky base! |
