“ Brand: Feather and Black / Type: Desk „
Since we moved into our new house nearly 4 years ago now, we have been gradually kitting out every room. We bought my eldest daughter a bed and chest of drawers in the Noah range some time back, and have recently completed her room with the addition of a bookcase, desk, and the item I am going to talk about here - the desk tidy. In the picture it is the top bit of the desk that you can see and comprises two shelves, two drawers, a pen holder and a cork board. Like the rest of the range it is a solid wood (poplar) painted item, finished in what I would describe as an ivory white. The desk tidy itself is currently advertised at £149 on the Feather and Black site, we paid less than this in a Christmas promotion, and the tidy was delivered with our other items. It is a ready made piece of quality furniture that sits neatly on the desk and complements it beautifully.
Though this is child's furniture, it is, I think, designed to last a fair few years, certainly the desk itself can be sat at by an adult comfortably. The tidy itself is the same width as the desk, clearly - the dimensions are W106cm x D16cm x H40cm - it's not so high as to be overpowering and, in my opinion, looks smart with the desk. My daughter is just 7, but already of an age where she is starting to get homework and we bought this item really to get her into the habit of sitting and working at a desk in her room, and organising herself, for this purpose it is perfect.
The two shelves on the left are height adjustable and the right size to take ornaments or small dictionaries and the like (my daughter has a healthy mix of study materials and typical girls' bedroom pink things). What you can't see very well in the picture is that there is an integrated pen holder - this can be removed to take out your pens and has two compartments. This works well for having writing materials at hand, and the two small drawers are perfect to stow pencil cases and secret diaries. My daughter really finds the noticeboard helpful and, amongst the odd party invitation or two, also has pinned up any projects she is working on, or certificates she is proud of. You don't get a huge surface for the pin board but it is thick enough for pins to stay firmly put and a handy organisation aid, and the whole thing is deep enough and heavy enough to sit comfortably on the desk with no risk of toppling.
All in all the desk tidy is a resounding success, and I have to say my daughter's desk is, thus far, a thing of organised beauty, in direct contrast to my own desk, sadly. This tidy is a well made, well finished item - the box, which the feather and black delivery company took away with them (an unpack service is part of the deal) did say that it is "made in china", but the poplar wood is of good quality and this is an item made to last. We haven't owned it as long as her bed and other items, but I'm sure that it will wear as well as they have. Though I can't pretend this is a cheap item at all, you are getting something that is ready assembled and definitely not a flat pack - and actually the desk itself when on sale is a lot cheaper than similar, less good quality items available on the high street. Overall we are really pleased with this item, it's well designed and, having paid a slightly lower price we don't think that it is bad value for what you are getting - on that basis I recommend it.
