Advantages: Irecomend, cheapish
Disadvantages: maybe a tad uncomfortable
Fabulous futons. A sofa bed. We have a Futon in The spare bedroom, used to be my daughters room (still is really) She is grown and married now has own house. It is a double Futon about 9 years old. We bought it new from a local bed shop for about 80 pounds. We bought it because we decided Sleepydormouse had outgrown her cabin bed .We bought a double as we sometimes have guests to stay and thought a double would be more useful. Also we thought it would not be many years before sleepydormouse found a bedmate. We also thought if she needed the space in her bedroom she could always fold it up. The futon we bought is a pine base one, it has three panels made of slats of pine wood these are linked together and rest on small pine runners about 4 inches high . It has a mattress made of cotton it’s a bit like a thick quilt ,not as thick as a conventional bed mattress this takes the shape of your body and needs tossing shaking occasionally. So imagine three pine slatted panels linked together on the floor with a thin mattress on it and you have the futon bed. To fold it up into a sofa is fairly easy. Take the mattress off and fold one end panel under the centre panel then raise the other end panel and it has an extending leg (strip of wood) that you raise to support the back of the futon now a sofa. Place the mattress on the wooden frame with one third folded under another for the seat. Hey presto a sofa, now that didn’t take too long did it? Looks ok, Comfort fine, it is fairly comfortable to sleep on. I have slept on it occasionally. Sleepy Dormouse slept on it for a couple of years before leaving home for uni. Sleepy Dormouse took it to her new unfurnished house, used it for about 6 months before they could afford own bed. (Good point easy to undo and transfer to another house /room if required) . It now rests in her old room again and is used when we h
ave guests or she comes home with her husband I am glad I had the forethought to buy a double when did saved the expense and trouble buying a double later and the inconvenience of them sleeping on the floor. The only part I can see wearing out is the mattress but that can be replaced fairly easily and cheaply. It is still in very good condition. So overall a good buy. You can get more of a variety of Futons now futons with arms on, ones that look more like sofas with a deeper base. To be honest would not like to use ours as a sofa for long, not comfortable enough. Although Sleepydormouse had a similar one as a sofa at her flat at uni. Some of the more expensive ones may be more comfortable. Futons are certainly a fairly cheap convenient convertible piece of furniture. I would certainly recommend them. Certainly good for putting up Christmas guests LOL Happy Christmas Mary

- 21/12/02 I think futons are just as comfortable as 'ordinary' beds. Far more convenient as well. |
