Advantages: Inexpensive, look great, easy to put together
Disadvantages: You have to assemble it yourself
My boyfriend, son and I live in a small 2 bedroom flat together, and I drive myself crazy constantly moving things around and trying to find storage for all our 'junk'.
I longingly gaze at the ikea website, dreaming up efficient and attractive storage solutions and I finally ordered some stuff, despite the hefty £35 delivery charge.
One item we have bought and put together just last night, is a Billy bookcase. I chose it to go in our bedroom, and as I have a lovely oak dressing table from Dwell, I'm slowly trying to change the furniture to all oak. (At the moment the bed is pine, wardrobe is more like a cherry, it's ecclectic haha.)
So, our Billy bookcase is in oak veneer. Cheaper for them to produce no doubt, than something made entirely of wood. It cost just under fifty quid, £47.96 to be precise. The one I chose is 2m tall and 80cm wide, which is perfect to fit next to my dressing table, although it's tucked behind the bedroom door but that's not a problem at all.
Billy bookcases come in numerous styles, colour and sizes and are really affordably priced. As with all ikea furniture, they are flat pack items which require you to assemble them. I am rubbish at this kind of thing, and my boyfriend hates doing it too. But much to my surprise, we managed to put the thing together AND attatch to the wall in around an hour and a half, with no problems along the way.
I am delighted with my new bookcase. It looks lovely and utilises the space in our room brilliantly. It's almost to ceiling height, but I could put some light things on top of it if I needed to, especially as they include the fixings to fix it to the wall making it sturdy. Most importantly, I've managed to fit all our books and dvd's onto it, with a shelf to spare! The shelves are also adjustable, there are holes so you can change them around to provide differing widths of shelving to cater for your books.
Although it was inexpensive for a large piece of furniture, it doesn't look cheap at all. Just plain, simple, clean lines, and a lovely design perfect for your books, dvd's, cd's whatever else you might want to keep on there. My son spied it first thing this morning and said 'oooooooooooh boooks', but I am pleased they give you the fixings for the wall, so he can't pull it onto himself.
I envisage myself buying another one in the future, should our collection of books grow to need another!
Summary: If you need book storage, you have to get one of these

- 27/05/09 People tend to take the mic out of Ikea, but the truth is, they stock some really nice stuff, it's inexpensive and always stylish. Nice review. xx |
