Advantages: SOOO versatile. Holds a lot of weight.

Disadvantages: Self assembly, but easier to get thru' doors that way!

The best storage system I have come across, used for all sorts of things.

I purchased some Billy bookcases four years ago, and they have been one of the best investments I have ever made.

Uses:

~~~ READING ROOM ~~~
Used as bookcases.
~~~ LIVING ROOM ~~~

Used more bookcases. With optional shelf inserts, they can also hold CDs and Videos. Much neater than buying fifty assorted CD holders which don't quite match, and tons cheaper too.

Each bookcase holds a few hundred CDs.

~~~ BEDROOM ~~~
Optional doors attached to bookcases, white curtains on doors, used as wardrobe shelving.
~~~ KITCHEN ~~~

Used as shelving.
Ideal for cans - they don't get lost as the shelves are not as deep as kitchen cabinets.

~~~ GYM ~~~
Used to hold gloves, small weights, ropes, spare towels, and all the other assorted paraphanelia in a readily accessible manner.
If they weren't accessible, I know that I'd be too lazy to use them.
As you can see, in addition to looking good, these bookcases are very versatile, and additional units can be purchased as and when required.
When I no longer need a bookshelf in one room, it easily finds a new home in another room.
This long running range of IKEA shelving has just been updated. It is now also available in silver, in addition to birch, beech, white, and a few other colours.
Prices range from £35 to £69 for the basic bookshelves.
Heights: 106cm, 202cm & 230cm(with extention).
Widths: 60cm & 80cm.
All but the middle shelf are fully adjustable. Additional shelves and inserts can be purchased, as can doors and various other matching extras.
As a frugal ex-student, I thoroughly recommend this range of shelving. I've lived with them for four years while renovating the house, so have used them in various guises and set
tings. They work, look good, and are easily moved. All but one visitor have thoroughly approved of the overall effect. The exception preferred chintzy floral and lace effects. In a strange kind of way, that pleases me. I would feel spooked if everyone in the world approved of my tastes.
I too am a fan of Billy and other IKEA stuff. They make CD shelves too, same height but slimmer and shallower so your CDs don't get lost at the back (suppose you'd have to put one between two full depth Billies?)
These sound great! I'm always looking for new bookshelves - seem to need a new bookshelf at the rate of about one per couple of months at the moment!
You have a gym?!! Wow - thats really energetic!
ShoppingGirl,
You sound like a hoarder after my own heart.
Not only are they sturdier than the MFI versions, but they're also larger. This is not always immediately apparent, but they're much deeper and taller, and therefore have about double the capacity of an MFI shelf of the same width.
The other thing is that they are exactly the right depth for magazine holders. I now have the majority of my household paperwork in little plastic sleeves arranged alphabeticallly in magazine holders. No more lost paperwork!
