Ikea Billy Bookcases
Advantages: Great storage, look good, very flexible
The IKEA 'Billy' range must be a good seller, as we have had ours for close to 10 years now and the same designs are still on sale now. The range includes book cases, corner units, display cases (basically a bookcase with 3 wooden and 2 glass shelves, and glass doors) cabinets (a small bookcase with solid doors) wall shelves, extension pieces and CD towers (these are named 'Benno' but match the Billy range perfectly). The extension pieces I mention effectively raise the whole bookcase by 35cm and makes what was the top of the bookcase, an extra shelf. Ideal if you need the extra storage or if you have higher ceilings in your house (they'll fit under a standard ceiling too, but proportionally, probably look better in a room with a higher ceiling)
The colour options have varied a little over the years but white, black and various wood finishes (beech, birch, oak and mahogany) seem to be standard although I have also seen them in red, blue, silver and printed finishes (the latter looking like it's been doodled all over by a teenager or something?!) The Billy range is obviously not real wood, but veneered chipboard like most flat-pack furniture. But, when built up, they are very sturdy and the finishes look good. Using the instructions and allen key provided all the units are easy to assemble, only doors take a little time and patience to fit correctly, but it's not difficult as such.
The best thing about the range is that it's modular. All the units compliment each other perfectly and can be arranged any way you like. We have a display case with glass doors, a corner unit, a small bookcase with solid doors, and 3 CD towers in a mahogany finish. When we recently moved house the shape of the living room was different and we couldn't use the units in the same configuration we had them in our previous house. This wasn't an issue though, as it was simple to arrange them differently, making the best use of the shape of the room. We liked the Billy range so much we recently bought another bookcase (in a light beech colour) to use upstairs. Also shelves can be moved or removed easily to make way for bigger books or ornaments. This also goes for the Benno CD towers, where we have removed a few of the lower shelves to make room for DVDs instead of CDs.
I find the Billy range fantastic value for money. They don't look as 'cheap' as the prices might suggest, and they offer lots of storage and great flexibility. Recommended!
Summary: Cheap but certainly not nasty!
