Ikea Billy Bookcases
Advantages: Brilliantly cheap, functional, easy to put together
Disadvantages: Maybe a bit basic for some tastes
I like books. A lot. Therefore I own a lot of books. It doesn't feel like I buy that many but magically they keep appearing, overflowing from shelves, sitting in piles on tables and floors, lurking in handbags and random drawers. It became apparent about a year ago that I needed more bookshelves!
On a tight budget, the first place I thought of was Ikea. I saw the Billy bookcase on their website and googled it to see what other people thought. One of the results was a news article about the Billy's 30th birthday, and its iconic status. Well, perfect, I thought. I can get something pretty cheap that also just happens to be a design classic!
I bought three Billy bookcases, two in white (although they are more of an off-white cream colour than a true white) and one red. The boxes they were packaged in were a little bit unwieldy, not heavy but long and thin so a bit difficult to manoeuvre and even more difficult to fit into the car! I recommend taking measurements to ensure the box will fit if you have a smaller sized car.
The bookcases were a dream to construct, the instructions were clear but to be honest it was so simple it was fairly self explanatory. All the screws and pins were included and the only extras I needed were a hammer and a screwdriver. The bookcases are light and easy to move around when constructed so you can chop and change a few times before you make your final decision where to put them.
One thing I like is that there is a bit of a cutout at the back base of the bookcase so that it sits on top of a skirting board and the back board can be flush against the wall. Ikea recommends that you attach the bookcases to the wall to make them more stable once they are filled with books. I didn't do this as my walls weren't suitable but none of them have come crashing down yet so I'd consider it optional. You'd probably be more inclined to do it if you had small children in the house who could possibly pull the bookcase over or a cat who might climb on it.
The bookcases come in a variety of heights and widths to fit pretty much any space, and all the shelves are adjustable except the middle one so you can fit any height of book. I've been really happy with my Billys and I plan to buy more as my book collection increases. In fact I may need a bigger house...
Summary: Too many books? Billy can help!
