Ikea Expedit Bookcase
Advantages: It looks lovely, surprisingly light and strong, an overall excellent unit!
Disadvantages: None that I can think of....
There are many different sizes and finishes of these storage shelves available, mine is the smaller one being 149cm high, 79cm wide and 39cm deep and it is coloured with the newly released red gloss finish. There were many colours available at the time of purchase and there were also many more traditional looking Expedit units which were a wood effect that actually cost less than the red unit I chose.
~~~Unpacking and setting the beast up~~~
Now the box was rather large at roughly 150cm tall, 40cm wide and 30cm deep but it fitted inside my Smart Forfour car with ease (Except for me being slightly squashed all of the way back). The box is extremely heavy and it's a two person job when moving it or putting it in the car - my poor Mother nearly collapsed when she lifted the other end with me, slight exaggeration but it is very heavy and the box should not be carried alone. Unpacking was very simple but my goodness there were some parts inside!
The unit is totally flat packed and not one part of the unit is ready assembled; inside we found many red shelving parts, a packed of wooden dowels, screws, a handy little screwdriver and a rather large instruction sheet. I was instantly impressed with the quality of the parts despite them being rather light, the red colour looked absolutely fabulous and there were no laminating flaws whatsoever. A quick flick through the instruction book made the assembly look very easy and in all honesty it was. During my quick flick through I noticed that the unit can actually be attached to a wall if standing up to avoid it tipping over, the parts are included for this which is handy. Unfortunately there are no words in the instruction manual, just pictures but it was all pretty much self-explanatory.
The shelving parts are all held together with little wooden dowels and 8 rather long metal screws. This surprised me and I did start to wonder if it would be as strong as the one I had seen on display in the store as there was no recommendation of using glue anywhere. The dowels were very easy to insert, they simply pushed into the holes and allowed the unit to be assembled shelf by shelf. Once they were all inserted the unit started coming together and I inserted the last screw into the top, tightened it an voila, my cabinet was looking fabulous and it felt just as strong and sturdy as the one I had seen on display.
The construction was extremely easy considering the amount of parts and I doubt that anyone would have a problem doing it. One little building tip of mine is not to hit the little wooden dowels in with a hammer like I did with the first one, the dowels will push through the face of the shelves as it is only a thin chipboard type of material after all and I should have thought about that before doing it. Luckily it was not badly damaged but it could have been worse!
~~~Using the cabinet and optional accessories~~~
The unit looks absolutely fabulous in my newly decorated room and I reckon that it's probably my most worthwhile possession that I have purchased over the last few months. There is a lot of surface room on top which soon became the proud new home of my pet budgie 'Roger' who seems very happy up there. I also have lamps, speakers and various other bits and bobs stored on it. The back of the unit is open which allows me to run cables from whatever is on the shelves and out of the back being neatly hidden which is very handy. The unit feels strong and it has supported every item that I have placed on it so far, it even supported me last week as I sat on top to hang a picture next to it.... There were no signs of it cracking or the light material giving way while I was on top and it felt perfectly strong - But if you do purchase one of these I recommend that you do not do this! (Could be dangerous)
There are many different accessories that you can purchase for this lovely storage solution either in an Ikea store or on their website. You can get baskets called 'Branas', as they are known in the world of Ikea and they fit neatly inside for the storage of clothes, underwear of anything else that you do not want on display. If you are using the unit as a display cabinet you can purchase strip lighting that illuminates the inside of the shelves to show off the delightful Items that you have inside. There are many other accessories available too such as inserts with drawers and wheels to move the thing around a room. All items are fantastically thought out and I now have a few that I could not resist ordering online.
One other neat feature with this storage shelving is that it can be used horizontally or vertically. Mine is vertically and it has impressed me with stability etc. This meaning that it can be used as a cabinet or a sideboard or whatever you want really.
~~~ Quality and cleaning ~~~
As I've mentioned above, I'm extremely pleased with the quality of the shelving. It is extremely light and being made out of particle board makes it strong and light, amazingly the unit is filled with paper as a packing material! I believe it's more of a cardboard material but wow, I would never have thought that!
The plastic coating is of a very good quality and mine has not scratched or bubbled yet. Ikea recommend cleaning with a damp cloth and I find it easy to clean due to the gloss finish. Any stains that I have managed to create on my unit have been easy to remove without any elbow grease at all. Overall very easy to keep clean and no maintenance is required.
~~~ Overall opinion ~~~
I'm actually very impressed with this storage unit and I would certainly buy another one if I ever run out of space. There are many sizes and types available and a huge variety of colours. Mine cost £79.99 but they had the beech effect version next to mine in store and this from memory was a lot cheaper, I can never resist red as a colour so I went for that one... Definitely worth every penny! It looks absolutely fabulous and if you like vibrant and good on the eye products then their new coolour range could definitely suit you!
Thanks for reading,
Summary: A fabulous unit, I highly recommend!
