Ikea Expedit Bookcase
Advantages: Great value, organised storage, looks good
When we moved to our new house I was very happy to have a 2nd room downstairs that could be used for the children to play in, to keep my living room looking quite nice and uncluttered rather than being taken over by all the children's things.
However I still wanted the children's playroom to look nice and organised too so we planned a trip to ikea to stock up on storage.
I was considering between these expedit shelves or the trofast range but I decided to go for this as it would hold more toys in a more organised way, and I have not regretted my decision at all.
We went for the white colour and have gone for the large 5x5 unit on one wall and another 2x2 unit on the other side of the room. In total this fits in a lot of things. The 5x5 unit is very large at 185cm wide so in small rooms it could even take up the whole wall, and it does look very prominent in the room.
I did not build it myself as I am not very good at diy, so we went for the ikea assembly service - the men who came to build it did so extremely quickly, I was actually shocked at the speed, although the assembly service is quite pricey but worth it to me as I would not have managed it myself.
There is quite a range available in ikea of boxes, baskets, doors and drawers that fit into the expedit unit which makes it really versitile which is something really nice about this range. I went for the drona boxes which are a simple fabric box that fit exactly in the cube spaces. These are good value and do the job for children's toys, but for a more mature look you could go for the more expensive baskets as that would look lovely in a living room.
You can fit quite a lot into each of the cubed areas, for example I have fitted in a lot of train track into one compartment and fitted all of the childrens happy land/little people things into 2 compartments. You can fit a good amount of books or puzzles into a cube too.
I have also left quite a few of the shelves open to display toys which can look quite nice.
I got a couple of the cube divider units which split one cube into 4 smaller ones, to hold the smaller bits and pieces. I have actually found these less useful than I thought, although they are just the right size for cds but the spaces do become quite small when split into the 4, so really I found it better to keep the majority as the full size.
I have had quite a few compliments on these shelves when people have come round and seen the children's playroom, as it really does look good especially for the price which is only 129 pounds for the 5x5 unit in white!
I would definitely recommend this range, its ideal as you can choose which size to go for out of 2x2, 4x2, 4x1, 5x5 so should be able to find something to fit in any space. They are great for organised storage and look very solid and not really "cheap" looking as some people expect from ikea. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.
