Advantages: None

Disadvantages: The whole experience has been worse than awful

We used the kitchen installation service from Ikea Edmonton and it has been the worst service you could imagine.

They deal with an affiliated company called Quality Job (based in Birmingham) who sent the surveyor and the builders. They delayed the start of the fit initially by one week (but only after we had hired and paid for the requsite skip). When they finally arrived they worked from only about 10.30 to 4pm on the best days. It was clear they were trying to juggle more than one job at the same time.

The initial survey done was wrong and so lots of changes had to be made involving trips back to Ikea and time taken off work. They only ever did about half of what they said they would do on any given day and so consequently what was estimated to take a week rapidly expanded to 3 weeks. During this time we had no functioning kitchen. They frequently left us with no hot water or heating overnight.

As they ran out of time the quality of the workmanship deteriorated. We got to the point where, with the kitchen two thirds finished, the builder just started not turning up at all and having his mobile phone switched off.

We are yet to receive written answers to our written complaints. The kitchen is still not finished - eg. the fridge door is so badly attached that it will not close and when we had a dishwasher engineer from the manufacturers (Whirlpool) inspect our dishwasher he informed us that it was so poorly installed that any further servicing would be impossible.

The initial estimate for completion was 6th May. It is now 29th June. When we called Quality Job today they claimed they had no idea what we were talking about (despite 4 page letter detailing the problems having been sent to them 1.5 weeks ago). Every time we call them they tell us the person we need to speak to is in a meeting and will call us back. Over the course of the installation they have promised to call us back approximately 8-9 times and have only actually called us once. (This was to arrange for the builder to come back to finish the job - he never turned up and gave no explanation as to why).

The problem seems to be with Quality Job as the actual kitchen delivered was fine - it is the installation we are not happy with. The fact that Ikea themselves are not the installation company is also problematic as when we've tried to complain to them they refer us to Quality Job.

I was very surprised to read the other review of the kitchen installation service which was glowing. Perhaps they used a different Ikea which contracts out to a different installation company?

Anyway this has been extremely stressful and time consuming and of course the problem remains unsolved. Don't use them.

(PS my husband is Swedish and we are usually very well disposed to all things Scandinavian - so this isn't just sour grapes!)

Summary: Don't use the kitchen installation service from Ikea Edmonton - (a company called Quality Job)

Good review, actually very similar experience to mine.

I contracted Quality Job directly to fit the kitchen that I bought direct from Ikea. To say they made a hash of it is an understatement. The original job was sub-standard and 7 months later they still have not rectified it, and the fitter is uncontactable and apparently no longer used by QJ. It has in fact since emerged that their fitter discarded some parts of my kitchen, possibly after damaging them, and replaced them with his own parts without telling me.

Dreadful workmanship, days when their people simply failed to turn up, awful customer service, calls not returned. Even after their remedial inspector finally came round and described the work as "abysmal", they are still refusing to redo it. In fact they suggested that I am trying to defraud them. Legal action now seems like the only recourse for me.

Deal with Quality Job at your peril - it has been one of the most painful experiences of my life. The company will surely go under before long, and good riddance I say. Stick to recommendations if possible, as suggested by count zero.

IKEA, MFI, Magnet all these high street installers are a real lottery and I don't look forward to dealing with them again. Best bet is to ask around friends etc. to recommend a local builder if possible well worth any extra cost for the peace of mind.

I understand that it is not sour grapes although something you missed in your review which was important was whether the work was quoted on a time basis or a fixed price because that would make one hell of a difference to me if the workmen dragged the work out. Being fair to Ikea, perhaps you would have been better reviewing Ikea from the planning and quality of furniture supplied, and doing a separate review of the company that Ikea employ, by suggesting the company on your page where it says suggestions.
