Ikea Lack Coffee Table
Advantages: cheap and stylish
Disadvantages: easily damaged.
I purchased the Ikea lack coffee table a little over a year ago, and was amazed at the incredible value; it cost me around £16.00 as I opted for the oak effect. There is a choice of colours, birch effect, oak effect, and black-brown and white which is cheaper at around £14.00. There is a choice of two sizes and I chose the smaller, which was more practical for my home, as it left more space for my boys to play.
The size of the small one is 90cmx 55cm and the height is 45cm.
I was amazed at how easy this table was to assemble and all tools are supplied. I managed to assemble this table alone, which is amazing because I'm not the most DIY minded of people. You simply insert a screw into each leg and turn slightly, and then place the other end of said screw into ready- made hole in table top, then turn leg to tighten, I opted not to put in the magazine shelf in as my youngest son loves to climb and I was worried he would use the shelf to clamber onto the top and fall, but the instructions seemed simple enough. The legs are chunky and sturdy as is the top being about an inch and a half in thickness, the magazine shelf is somewhat thinner at about a half inch thick, this is made of a more durable and somewhat denser material.
The table is incredible light at about 10kg and is made of fibreboard, so not altogether hardy or long lasting. I can't imagine these appearing on the antiques road show in years to come. They looked very smart and did not look as cheap as they were. They are very sturdy and have no wobble when assembled, and I had not even included the magazine shelf which most cheaper tables need for added stability.
On the down side the surface scratches really easily and with two boys this was not ideal. Also when vacuuming you need to take care not to catch the legs as they damage fairly easily. The table died a few weeks back as my son banged a car onto the top and put a hole into it. So although they look really nice, their practicality around children is not ideal. Saying that I am considering buying another one because they are simply so cheap. Even if they only last a year in my house, the price makes it worth it. Hopefully as my little one gets bigger he will be a little less boisterous with his toys. Taking everything into consideration, I would still recommend this coffee table because they are simply amazing value and perfect for people on a low budget. Just care needs to be taken, particularly with boisterous children.
Summary: An extremely cheap and stylish coffee table.
