Ikea Lack Side Table
Advantages: cheap, so easy to put together, looks good
Disadvantages: sharp corners
My friend and I take many random trips to Ikea, and almost every single time we come home with things that we don't necessarily need! Last year in the run up to Christmas we decided to have a ride over, with nothing particular in mind to buy but thinking they may have had some nice Christmassy decorations and things. Walking round we came across a small table which had a price tag on of just five pounds which we thought must have been a mistake! I wrote the number down so we could check in the furniture section as it was a nice little side table and I knew just the use for it!
The Ikea Lack side table is a wooden square table which although very plain looks really quite stylish. There is a choice of eight colours in the Lack range: white, black, birch, black-brown, high gloss grey, high gloss red, high gloss white, and oak. The size of the table is 55cm L x 55cm W x 45cm H.
I was torn between choosing the oak effect or the black table but in the end decided to opt for the black as I think it looked more expensive and would go well with my living room which is black and white. I think with the colours that are available there is something for everyone as one will match most styles of decor.
The table comes flat packed so there is some assembly required which to be honest I dreaded as I hate making any type of furniture. There was no need for me to worry as it really couldn't have been more simple at all! Taking the pieces out of the box I soon realised it would take literally seconds to put it together as the legs have a large screw sticking out of the end and the table has four holes on the underside. Simply screw the legs on, turning the legs to tighten them in, and that was it! Easy peasy! It is a very light table so can be moved around with ease if you should need to, and the legs are very easy to remove again so it can be pulled apart for easy storage also.
When buying this table I had one use in mind and that was to use it to put my Christmas tree on as I really don't like having it on the floor. Initially I was a little concerned about the weight as it was a lightweight table but it can hold around 25kg so it is fine for this purpose. Obviously as I only use it for the tree the table only appears at Christmas and so 12 months down the line it is still in immaculate condition.
One thing I would say about the Lack table is that the corners are pointed so if you have young children it may be advised to get some cushioned protectors for them as it does hurt if you catch yourself on there (which I learnt last year with a cracking bruise!!).
I have since bought another one of these tables for my daughter and it is used almost every day - for playing on, colouring/crafts and even dinner. I am happy with the durability of the table as it is still in very good condition despite various paint, glue and dinner spillages! I am not sure how long I would say one of these tables would last but they are a little delicate on the top. My mum had one of the tables and she banged into the door handle while carrying it out of the room and there was a large dent in the table top so its worth noting that the top isn't as strong as the legs.
The Ikea Lack side table is available for £4.99, though if you decide to opt for the high gloss colours the price goes up to £9.99 which I don't think is a bad price to pay for a table at all. I now know quite a few people that have bought these tables since Ibought mine and they are all extremely happy with the quality for the price and the various uses they have got out of them. I will soon be getting my table out again so I can put up my Christmas tree and have already got my use out of my £4.99!! I really can't recommend these side tables highly enough, I think they are excellent value for money and look much more expensive than they actually are.
Thank you for reading my review.
Summary: A fab little table
