Advantages: sturdy, nice looking, cheap
Disadvantages: none for me
Whenever my friend and I go to ikea we seem to spend a fortune buying things that we didn't really go in for but what seem like too good a price to miss! This was how I came to own the ikea lack side table and this is my review of that product!
As my friend and I browsed the aisles in ikea we came across a small square side table with a price tag of a fiver. We both thought perhaps it was wrongly priced but it was actually selling for just five pounds. They do cost £5 for a couple of the colours or £8 for a standard wooden effect one or £10 for a high gloss finish one now having checked the ikea website. The table was available in various colours at the time of purchase but I bought a pale blue one as I planned to pop it in my son's bedroom.
I have to say that I am not a fan of flat pack furniture as I am pretty rubbish at building it but since that is generally the cheapest option and I am a single mum with not much disposable income I often have to just grin and bear it! It was with relief when I opened the packaging of the table and saw that it was going to be very easy to assemble as the four legs had a big screw sticking out of the top of them and of course the underside of the table had four holes in which to screw the legs in to. It literally took me five minutes as a maximum to put the table together and so I didn't have the usual stresses of building and so it was a pleasant experience.
Now for a fiver I have to say I was thinking that this table was probably going to be a bit rubbish and wouldn't last my son very long at all. I actually purchased the table a couple of years ago though and it is still going strong! My son uses the table as a kind of work area for when he wants to draw and colour and because he is only seven he finds the table it at the right kind of height for him to sit on his small chair and work from. It sits at 45cm tall and so it isn't going to work as a desk or something for someone older but for a small child's bedroom I think it is a great piece of furniture.
The table is made from all kinds of random things including particle board, fibre board and a paper filling! I have to say I wouldn't have had a clue about this had I not looked online because it doesn't look like it is really cheaply made and it certainly doesn't feel as though it is bad quality. The only issue that we have had is that recently a few small marks of the blue paint on the top of the table have chipped a little but considering my son plays all sorts on that table I am not surprised!
My son has the table against the wall in his room in between his wardrobe and his book case and it fits nicely in to this space without looking like it is out of place or too large or small. The dimensions of the made table are 55cm long, 55cm wide and 45cm tall and so it is a nice size really I think. I do think it would make a handy little table for in the corner of your room or next to a sofa for popping hot drinks on and things if you didn't want a big coffee table in your lounge. The table is easily cleaned with either polish or a anti bacterial spray and I haven't noticed the paint be lifted by these products at all.
I would certainly recommend this piece of furniture to you as for just a few pounds you are able to pick up a decent looking solid feeling piece of furniture and so I think it is ideally suited to people just starting up their own home or for those with small children looking to create an arty craft area or just a simple table for serving lunch on which can be easily cleaned and moved around! The sides of the table are quite pointy and so for particularly young children you may wish to purchase some corner protector cushions but I didn't bother for my son and he was four when I purchased this.
Thank you for reading my review!
Summary: A good cheap small table
