“ Brand: John Lewis / Swivel chair / Type: Office chair „
**What is it?**
The John Lewis Madison Office Chair is an office type chair for use primarily in a home office set up, with a computer table. It is not really a lounge sort of chair, but with most people now having a computer table, the need for an office chair at home means there is plenty of choice out there. We went for the John Lewis Madison Office Chair because it looks modern and is comfortable.
**Price and Availability**
The John Lewis Madison Office Chair is available exclusively instore and online at John Lewis. A postage and packing charge of £3.99 is waived when you spend over £75 so the P&P is actually free on this chair, which is very good if you don't live near a John Lewis (there aren't that many in non city centre locations especially in the North).
That said, I live near a John Lewis in Manchester so we purchased instore and this fitted in the boot of the car (a new Astra) as it actually comes in parts for assembly.
Price wise the John Lewis Madison Office Chair will currently set you back £99.99, a decent price for a good chair in John Lewis, obviously you can get an office chair cheaper but this I feel is a fair price for the chair. On occasion John Lewis will have a 10% off sale so if you're in no hurry you could try to find out when this is to save effectively £10.
Size: H98 x W49 x D53cm
Castor Type: Hardwood flooring and short pile carpet
Materials: Chrome and Fabric Mesh
The John Lewis Madison Office Chair is a black chair on a shiny chrome 5 point castor base, it has a fabric / foam seat, two adjustable arm rests and a black mesh backrest.
It looks very modern and stylish and would suit many an office / computer desk set up.
**Do It Yourself**
The chair comes in two parts, the 'top' and the 5 point castor base which are clicked together, it takes moments, literally, but you do need to lift the top of the chair, it isn't heavy but if you aren't tall or have back problems I'd suggest you get some help. There's no screwing or allen keys and so on. It's just for ease of transport - if you could get the assembled chair in your car then I am sure that John Lewis would help you click it together, as I've always found the staff in John Lewis incredibly helpful.
The chair is recommended for use for up to four hours a day, I think this is continuous use as I work from home two days a week and I use it for up to seven hours but these are interspersed with breaks, lunch and so on, and I find it perfectly acceptable to use for this amount of time.
The backrest is fixed, but I don't find this a problem personally as the rest of the chair (arm rest, seat, height) is adjustable, so it means I can set it up to be perfectly comfortable for my needs. As the back is a taut mesh, it has a little give in it, and it 'hugs' your spine, making for distributed pressure, and a comfortable seat (in fact, more comfortable than the £500 seat I use at work for the other three days!)
The tilt and swivel functions are both smooth and easy to operate, no stiffness or creaking (unlike me!)
I find it very comfortable and supportive which is what you need in a chair you use in an upright work position for extended periods even with breaks.
I highly recommend the John Lewis Madison Office Chair. Yes you can get an office chair for £40 or even less but I highly doubt it would be as well made and as sturdy and comfortable as this chair, which is certainly built to last. I started to do my working from home 2 years ago after I had my little girl and went on to a flex working agreement. In that 2 years my John Lewis Madison Office Chair has remained as good as new and I use it over the weekend and in the evenings too should I have work to do, so it certainly has been value for money for me - the longer you have it, the more you appreciate it. It's cost me under £50 a year so far and will last me much much longer.
I will award the John Lewis Madison Office Chair a good strong 5 stars out of 5 with the recommendation that should you need to set up a half decent home office set up the one thing you can't really skimp on is the chair (and in comparison, my £40 desk is a steal from Argos) and I'd recommend visiting John Lewis and giving it a try out as I think like me you will find this comfortable and reasonably priced for the high quality.
Very pleased with this chair. It comes with a 12 months warranty with reciept also.
