My kitchen table had seen better days, it was scratched and none of the chairs matched so I decided it was time to splash out and get something posh. The children have all flown the nest so I didn’t need anything too large so off I toddled to town to have a browse around the furniture shops. The price of tables with four chairs shocked me to be quite honest; the cheapest that I could find was £199.00 from a large discount store, and even that was a bit too much for me to pay to be quite honest. I went home feeling a bit miffed and flicked through the Argos Catalogue and I found just what I was looking for. Could have saved myself some shoe leather if I had thought about Argos first. A Bistro set in black or white, and for only £58.99. I went straight back into town and bought it opting for the black set, it would look great in my kitchen. It came flat packed, but it did not take long to put together with the assistance of my electric screwdriver. Now that is a little item that I should do a ‘dooyoo’ on, it is great, but back to the tale…. The table went together easily just a few screws to attach the legs on and I did like the plastic coating on the table-top to avoid scratches whilst in transit and assembling. It peeled off very easily and the table looked great. 90 cm in diameter is a good size and it is very sturdy. Four chairs with a cane effect seat were a little bit more complicated, I had to read and then re-read the instructions. I got there in the end though after realising that I had put the centre screws in upside down! I was really pleased with my purchase, for about twenty-four hours! Every time I sat on one of the chairs the cane effect seat fell through the metal ring holding it together. Now I might be a wee bit tubby but I’m not that heavy. I must add here that these seats were actually all ready assembled all I had to do was attach the
legs and the backs so it was nothing to do with my handy work. I phoned Argos and they said that they had never had a complaint about them before so maybe my chairs were just a bad batch. They exchanged them no problem and apologised profusely and then again the following day and the day after that as well. I have had four sets of chairs now and they are still not right so I am returning the whole lot to Argos and getting my money back. It is a shame really because I really liked the set but there is definitely a designer fault with the chairs, it seems to me that the cane effect seat is not big enough to slot into the metal ring. Oh well I had better go browsing again for a new set. I suppose I will have to pay out a little bit more because it seems that you only get what you pay for.
